THOMANN DOUBLE BASSES

Dear friends, surfing in the Net i found some interesting proposals in the THOMANN's site. There are some fully carved basses with reasonable prices (1200-1500 euros). From the pictures they resemble me Strunals but i'm not sure. Has anybody got any informations about origin, quality etc oc these basses?
Thanks in advance.

There are some threads on the German-speaking www.bassic.ch forums.

It boils down to:

+ very robust

+ decent sound http://www.xup.in/dl,95339035/kontrabass_piezo.mp3/ (not mine)

+ no grooves in fretboard even after some time of playing

+ holds tuning over weeks

- bow unusable (except maybe for french grip)

- very thin-padded gigbag, but usable

- rosin unusable (opinions differ, seems to come from GEWA)

- strings could be better

Thanks

Thanks my friend, it answers the quality question. Does anyone knows if they are produced by Strunal?

Hello Micman, I have a THOMANN KONTRABASS 4 (4/4) purchased a few months ago and I am very happy with it. It IS a Strunal, fully hand carved, the label inside the db states "Handcrafted by Strunal-Luby u Chebu Czeck Republic. I've changed a few things on the bass though: I put on Obligato strings, a Velvet tailwire, and lowered the bridge by 2mm (the instrument was setup by Thomann, like I wanted, with a Jazz setup, but I still preferred less string height (even now there's no problem with bowing). The first impression I had with it was the powerful sound. I previously had a 3/4 laminate db that sounded very good (my teacher told me - the "E" wasn't so good...), but this Strunal has a BIG "voce", for me it's not just a decent sound as JMX reported. There were no gigbags or rosins included when I purchased the doublebass (I had to buy the accessories separately, making my choices). Generally it's not advisable to buy a doublebass without trying it out first, but I had to cope with my situation (I didn't want to spend a lot of money and I wanted to have a good selection of doublebasses to choose from). For me and for what I do, it's a very good instrument.

Thanks

Thanks Arduy, it confirms my first impression. I've been many times in Prague and i know the Strunals very well. The fully carved are real "powerhouses" in volume and quality of sound. I'm planning to buy one of them, opting for the 3/4 version, which fits perfectly my jazz explorations.
Again thanks

Hi Mikman,

I have the same one as Arduy except a 3/4. I bought mine from a local seller though not from Thomann so I cant say about their set up etc. but I'm very happy with it. Like Arduy I've added and amended a few small things over the last year and a half I've had it and they all make a big difference. I suppose if you do get it it'd be a good idea to bring it to a local luthier to get it set up properly after the trip anyway and he could iron out anything else you might want done.

The factory strings are poor so you'd want new strings but thats all part of getting your sound right anyway

best of luck

Thanks

Thanks Langer, that's my intention, to buy and improve it as much as it takes.
