Hmmm, maybe I should have said Epiphone, though I have a photo on my hard drive that shows an AS with that flat perimeter to the upper bout. The tuners look like the Klusons that came on both Kay and Epiphone basses.

Are you going to bid on it Molly?

I don't think these are Kluson Tuners either...the shaft on the tuner key is too short. I'll attach a Epi Kluson (1st picture) and a Kay Kluson (2nd picture) both tuners are from 1953.

Nope...I am not going to bid on this one...bid away if you would like to own this gem.

I don't know about 'too short' but they are definitely too thick to be Klusons....

Been trying to explain to some of ya'all that a well appointed db sometimes needs extra venting. There's the proof.

Take a minute to imagine how that hole came to be . . .

I'm a high school student at the moment, playing DB in the school orchestra, so I'm not looking for anything fancy, just for something to practice with at home. Is it a good idea to buy this bass? I know ebay can be a kind of sketchy place to buy instruments, but I live about an hour away from San Diego so I can go and check it out. So is this a good deal? Does the instrument seem fine? And about how much would it cost to fix and repair the bass?

For a cantina owner maybe, for a player no. I can walk to TJ and I'm not interested.

I'm with Molly on this one Jake. It's got rib linings. I don't remember rib linings on the AS. In fact the only ply basses I can think of that have rib linings are German.

Hey Phil take a closer look at this AS advertisement. All the AS and King DBs have external linings, as do Kays and Epiphones.

It may not be an AS, we'll have to wait and see, but the linings are appropriate.

I can’t say what it is…but I think I know what it is not. It is not a AS, Kay or Epi

Also, there were a few AS basses produced with out rib lining, internal tags, branding or pin stripes. These basses were early in the production as most have low numbers # 300- # 600. They were said to be a bare bones student grade bass or war time (short supply) basses. The bass Roy Huskey Jr played was an unlabeled, unkerfed bass…but it sounded awesome in his hands.

Jake…buy the beast and solve the mystery…it is cheap, cheap, cheap…no Mucho denaro

Well there you have it. Rib linings everywhere.

I'm quite sure the bass is a mess anyhow....

Check out the side profile, I see zero arching. I mean, I've seen Kay's with really shallow arching, but did they really make any with none?

Mexico has a well regarded guitar luthier tradition. I’m guessing this thing was knocked out by a guitar maker. That would explain the sunken top, flat radius fingerboard and strange f-holes. Most mariachi ensembles have a guitaron holding the bottom down. I have seen them with standup though. For all I know I might have heard this horn in the past.

Funky, but it would look cool in the corner of mi casa

It's called a Tololoche. This just happens to be a four string version.

Why does the starting bid keep going up? It was at $200 when first listed, then $250 and now $300. There are only 15 hours left in the auction... it isn't going to sell.
