Tololoche - Strolling Mariachi Bass

Just ran across one of these at a local garage sale. It's similar to a 1/2 upright in size, but very light weight. The top is a veneer that has some flex in it, so much so that the F holes are actually cut as two separate routes on each side of the top. On the other hand, it is glued well and very resonant. The seller told me they are handmade one at a time in Mexico for use by the strolling Mariachi - especially in Norteno or Banda music. They have a multicolored wrap string, like a guitarron or a bajo sexto.

Played it for about 10 minutes and I had to buy it. $120 later she was mine. Needs a smaller bridge, as the E string hangs off the edge of the fingerboard. Going to try a 1/2 size bridge on it. Also going to try to restring it with a VERY light gauge synthetic string. I don't think the top could support standard strings at 440 tuning.

Anyone else play one of these? It's an interesting little bass. Will post some photos once I finish carving her new bridge.

Yes. When I was in Mexico I asked the guy, "hey man, mind if I try?" They are nifty, a bass light enough to carry around all day.

Wow, great bass work! Did you catch the young man's reaction to the camera around 1:50?

This toloche business is awesome. Just found this dandy little number:

Clearly, it is the best when they ride it. Something I will try and incorporate in my future performances.

Edit: I mean tololoche. Forgot the extra lo

What some people use to do is tune them up a fourth: A, D, G, C

Resulting in some kind of baritone or tenor bass... if anything like that exists.

I need to get me one of those.

Tolo Tuning

I think the tolo is tuned with a low B below the E and has no G string so the tuning to an A on the low position is actually only a step up. The one I play is with a different gauge strings so I can play it in the standard E.
