Tony Garnier, with Bob Dylan, at the White House

Just saw the replay last night of "In Performance at the White House: A Celebration of Music from the Civil Rights Movement." Dylan played guitar on "The Times They are a-Changin'" with Patrick Warren on piano and Tony Garnier on upright.

Nice line by Tony, and he gets a great, deep tone. (I think old Bobby Z even stepped up his usual croaking singing style to a bit more melodic, for the occasion.) Nice work on the upright, though. The last several Dylan albums have Garnier, I think usually on both fretted and fretless electric, but the only time I saw Garnier play live, in 2002, he switched to upright for a few songs.

20+ years with Zimmy . . . it's possible that in his lifetime Tony Garnier has played to more people than any DB player in history!

Beautifully lit too. How cool does that look!
Tony has played more gigs with Dylan than anyone else that's for sure. He has also the been the MD for many years. Sam is probably correct, now that I think of it. Wow Cool stat.
Over the last few years, the number of tunes he plays on EB vs DB has shifted quite a bit. This last tour I saw in Boston, had Charlie Sexton playing electric guitar and Stu Kimball on acoustic, Tony only played one song on UB. A simply GORGEOUS ballad. Arco. Awesome. Just cant recall the name of the tune.

I'm a fan of Tony's. I enjoyed the profile on him recently in Bass Player. His bass is beautiful. Anyone recall the builder?

I don't know about these days, but Tony used to prefer 1/2 size basses.

Yes, he hasn't done so bad for a guy who learned to play upright busking for change on the sidewalks of San Francisco and Berkeley!

Tonys Fully carved Gibson bass is for sale @ David Gage. It's a nice punchy 3/4 and has been his main bass for many years. It's a beauty.

If you go to Pirastro's site and reference the bassist's statements page, you'll see a link to a photo of Tony and his bass with an endorsement to Pirastro. I believe this is the one he's using now and I think it's the one written of in the BP article. Very nice indeed. Not to mention he's a pretty cool guy who I hear can make a mean gumbo.

I just had to say how I remember Tony playing with the Grammy Award winning Texas/western swing band Asleep At the Wheel during the late 70's and 80's. I was fortunate enough to meet him and open (full band) for them at Billy Bob's in the late 80's in Fort Worth, Texas. He is amazing to watch and a great swing bassist. He appeared on the 1979 Grammy winning album "Alive from Austin." Just listen to their version on Route 66...

I can't recall the name of his current bass' builder. I tried to reference that article on the BP site. It's from Sept 2009. When I try to access the whole article, I get an error message. Anyone else know who it is?

According to the Sept. 2009 BP article, his current bass was built in 2006 by Paul Davies of Arts Music, Melbourne, Australia.

Thanks,
Pete

+1. I got to chat with Paul when I was looking around for my bass and he mentioned this fact. The picture below used to be on the (sadly) now defunct artsmusic.com.au website. Yum, no?

Paul makes some really lovely looking basses ; unfortunately I can't find any pics on Google, but I'll check later to see if I have any other pics saved on my pc at home.

I'm a big fan of Tony's and I've mentioned his name around here any chance I get. Seeing him play with Dylan back in 1990 was probably the biggest influence in getting me off the slab and onto the Big Bass. Dig him tremendously.

He sounded great at the White House.
