Trade in?

Howdy Ladies and Gents,

down the road, I'm looking at getting a new bass. The one I have is at that point where it's starting to hold me back from what I know i can do, so my question is...

Do shops take trade ins for money down on basses they're making? My bass has been appraised at somewhere around 8k USD, so it's not like we're talking CCB here, but I just have no idea. I also hold no illusions that I would get my appraised value on a down payment, the maker does need to make a profit after all.

Since I bought this bass from a stand partner in a community orchestra, I'm really a stranger to commercial instrument purchasing, so any info could be helpful. I also have a curiosity regarding whether or not makers tend to have some sort of payment program or anything.

regards,

eerbrev

I don't think there will be a satisfactory answer to your question about trade-ins; that all depends on the proprietor of the shop and their individual policies. Most shops I know will offer to put your instrument on consignment for a percentage of the sale.

I see you are located in Ottawa. I was there in August and sourced out a shop that has a number of basses on the second level of the shop (Peter Dawson Violins). You may want to contact them and see how they may assist you with the purchase of a new instrument and the sale of your old one.

As far as purchasing a new one is concerned, be patient and try out a number of different instruments. Once you are serious about buying, it would be a good idea to take the instrument to reputable luthier for an appraisal and to ensure that you may not be getting into extensive repair work.

Thanks for the reply. I'll definitely check out peter Dawson. I've been playing any other bass I can get my hands on for quite some time now, and have been very much formulating what kind of things I am going to need my new instrument to do and how it would, in a perfect world, feel like.

Does anyone have any firsthand experience selling an instrument on consignment in return for the purchase of an instrument form a shop, or a newly made instrument (such as somewhere like Upton or another new luthier?)

thanks,

Eerbrev
