Travel w bass via Greyhound or Amtrak

Does anyone have any experiences they want to share about traveling with a DB on either Amtrak or Greyhound?

I suspect Greyhound would not allow you to bring the bass on the bus. If so, will they accept it as baggage or will they require you to use GPX? The thought of placing a DB in a gig bag in the baggage compartment is not pleasant.

Is it any different for Amtrak?

Driving is not an option.

Thanks.

I've done Amtrak a few times, though not in the "heightened security" era. It would be a good idea to check beforehand. If you have the Acela option, pay the extra cost; you'll be treated much better. Take a selection of bungee cords. I've been able to tie the bass up in corners, handicapped areas, etc. Be sure to do all the above with the knowledge, assistance, and permission of the conductor, and tip if he'll accept it. Be prepared to buy a seat for the bass as a last resort.
