Uh - Ohhh

We were about half way through a 3 hour gig last Saturday. We had a female singer sitting in and the ring finger on my left hand stopped working. There was no feeing in it and it just locked in place next to my middle finger. It felt like the problem was coming up my forearm like a tendon or something. I somehow managaed to get through the tune. We screwed around for about 2 minutes while she left the stage and I was pretty much fine by the next tune. It scared the hell out of me. Has anyone else had this same experience?

I've had my fretting hand fingers(ring, like you)seize up in a monkey/death-grip after playing a couple of hours in 90-degree weather. This was on slab, but definitely HURT. I had reached my limits & kept going. A good long break & self-massage made it release, but I was through playing for the day.

No pain whatsoever for me. That's part of what was so strange. It wasn't a particularly taxing number we were playing either.

Hmmm- now that you mention it, it didn't hurt me either until I tried to pull my hand open w/my right.

Used to happen to me all the time. I just started practicing more often and longer per practice session and it took care of itself. If I go a couple of weeks without playing and then try to play a 4-hour gig it will act up again. Heat and exhaustion make it worse. It's just a lack of muscle tone. If you keep your chops in shape through regular practice (in this case your chops are your fingers and forearms) this problem should go away.

Nope, never happened. I suggest you forgo the internet advice and consult a physician who can examine you.

Yeah, I think you're on to something here. Maybe it's a psychological thing - the brain was focusing so much energy into that finger that it was overloaded.

About 10 years ago, I snapped the tendon in my left-hand ring-finger playing basketball. I wasn't playing double bass back then, but I thought my guitar playing days were over.

To my surprise, I was back playing guitar after a month of immobilisation and about two weeks of excercises. Now that finger is as strong as ever.

my left hand pinky locks on occasion (no pain). In my case, it's arthritis.

Drurb is right (as he almost always is). Get it checked and be sure.
