Then you start looking to find a bass in your budget range. You might end up with a new bass, you might end up with an old bass. You might end up stretching your budget range to get the bass that sounds most like what you hear in your head. Quote: |

Check (all Hail) Bob Gollihur's website for luthiers close to you, but I can't think of anywhere in Jersey that's more than a couple of hours from NYC. Between Gage, Merchant, Biase, Kolstein, Ideal in or near the city AND Geoff Morrow, Arnold Snitzer, Upton just north of the city, you are going to have several HUNDRED basses to look at and listen to.

Check 'em out @ uptonbass.com in mystic, conn. which should not be too far to drive - they are very buyer friendly . . . & also, . . . do a search here at this site for "upton bass" for feedback by satisfied customers . . .

I was in the same position of needing a bass to take on the road and after checking out a bunch of options, I decided the Upton was the best instrument for the job. For under $2000 it can't be touched IMHO. Check out this thread if you want a more detailed review from me and others. Got My New Upton Hawkes
hope that helps.

Don't just check one place either. Also in the "vintage" market, forget under $2000. Check Ken Smith's site for a full range of vintage from Kay to Kayn't touch with $50Kay, as well as good laminates under $2Kay. O.K.?
My $.02: Thinking "I'll buy a beat up vintage bass so I don't worry about dinging it up and knocking it around...." is just so "wrong" in so many ways. What you want is an inexpensive, durable and good sounding bass. Kremona-Bulgaria was my choice and later the choice of Xavier Padilla. Heavy durable. Fully carved too, bro and just a little more than your budget. But check 'em all out. BTW, Gollihur Music is in New Jersey.

Promises are there, but details require inquiry. There's enough homework above to keep you busy for a month. If you don't find anything there, get back to us. Craig's list might have some individual's selling basses, and there is the classified section on this site, Gollihur's site also. You might type "double bass for sale NJ" without the quotes into the google window and see what pops up.
