Upright with a cutaway design?

Just saw this on Craigslist in Dallas. Its a Framus upright with a cutaway design. It's listed at $950 which seem very reasonable. Anyone seen one like this before?

PS: not my instrument and I have no relationship with the seller.

I've seen a number of these in Europe - though never one in a finish like this. All the ones I've seen had binding and were sunburst or black.

Bethany Raines used to play one with The Good Ol' Persons and we had one at L & M for a while, a trade-in. The one at the store still had its original cotton canvas bottom-opening drawstring bag! Solid maple sides and nice Brazilian board - it went to a young player who really loves it.

Just made an offer on it so we'll see. Not like a need a 3rd upright.

The cutaway bass has been around for years. Probally as long (or longer) as the cutaway guitar. Look at this one with Duke Ellington: http://www.jazzonthetube.com/page/269.html
I think his looks exactally like the one that you referenced. This may be the bast of all possible worlds!

Most of the cutaways I've seen are German made. My local shop has a blonde for sale for $1199, but it has some delamination and the top is sinking on one side. Has a decent sound, though. So if this one is in good shape, it could be worth it.

I wonder ....I often play with my eyes closed. Do you suppose I would automatically go into thumb position at the usual transition point, even though that big chunk of corpus is no longer there to get in the way? I think I probably would. Maybe without that left shoulder, I'd zip up into TP, and just fall over.

This bass is pretty cool. I'm going to try to snag it.

Cool that you're close enough to try before you buy.

I used to own one- factory red with the white plastic binding, all laminate. It was your basic decent vintage plywood- like an average Kay. The neck had a catastrophic sudden failure and flew off the body during the second set of a packed rowdy Friday night bar gig. I sold it for $2200 about six years ago. It took around two days to sell at that price in Portland, Oregon; I think it still gigs around there regularly. Playong that cutaway for a few years was the main reason I put one in my bass build last year.

The seller has told me the bass is structurally solid but has a piece of the lamination that has come off of the top at the center not the edge. He is offering the bass to me for $850.
I'll try it out on Saturday.

I ended up passing because there was no way I could justify having a 3rd upright.
Seller is a nice guy who wants a local sale. Bass is now on sale for $750!

Do you know if it is still available? Is it in great playing condition? Setup wise and structurally? Not too concerned with cosmetics... How'd it sound? Is it a 3/4?

Didn't have a chance to inspect or play bass. Did speak with owner who described a spot on the side that was delaminating but was told bass was structurally solid. I assume this is a 3/4.

That's exactly why most of us don't like these things. That neck joint area where the ribs meet the neck butt is the most important grounding area besides the nut, for me anyway.
I've played on them....icky.

Besides we look cool with our arms and hands drapped over the upper treble side bout on a regular bass in our promo shots........better than one of those old Dick Contino accordian promo shots with his teeth laying on the keyboard of his Cordeen.

How about an upright Flying V? That would be wicked. I could get a special Clarus that goes to 11 to play it through.
