Upright only used amplified.

Hello, I'm venturing over here from the other side for some advice.

I currently have a POS cremona SB-1, and am thinking of upgrading to a nicer bass. My question is:

Since I always use my upright amplified (loud drummers) What if anything would be compromised by using a 1/2 size bass if it is always amplified anyway?

Another reason I am curious about a smaller upright is tendonitis in both of my arms.

Is a 1/2 size bass more or less prone to feedback? This is a constant irk with my current bass.

Thanks Much

In my experience, you have to start with a great acoustic sound to get a great amplified sound... and I doubt that you will be able to get a full 'drive a band' kind of sound out of a 1/2 size instrument.
I would consider sticking with a 3/4 size instrument and really focusing on your technique to see if that helps with the tendonitis.
In terms of feedback, do a little research here. You can do a lot to prevent feedback by using the right pre-amp.
Cheers,
John

If you only play amplified in a LOUD band, you might be better off with a EUB. Some have a 34" scale. Most can be made to sound OK when played pizz.

Tendonitis - an ugly thing. Been there and got the t-shirt. But it was from playing electric bass on two steady gigs - one daytime/one at night - 6 days a week, no days off. My upright had a very small neck and was played occasionally during that period. My basses now are larger and have big thick necks. Something about having a wider spacing in your hand(and make sure you're using correct left hand technique)gives you less stress in your hands and arms. It took a while to get used to, but I haven't had any problems since the change.

Loud amplification - check out what they use over on rockabillybass.com. I see lots of Underwoods and K&K Rockabilly pickups being used. Maybe cover the f holes. Some basses just amplify better. I don't think size or type of wood is all that much of a factor. A lot of people say plywoods are the loudest amped, but I had a 200 yr old German that amplified great. A solid body EUB would be a good choice if you don't need the look of a big bass on stage. If you play at all acoustically, a 1/2 size would be a disappointment. A good sounding bass with a good setup is best.

If you have already found a 1/2 size that you like, then why not? I wouldn't be searching for a 1/2 size, however. That would be limiting your options when searching for a new bass. I don't think a smaller bass is going to help you with your tendonitis, either. Some basses have a tighter feel, and some looser, the latter might be helpfull to you, but it is more of a set up than a size issue. You really need to focus on the human side of your rig to address your tendonitis, good technique, proper warm up, carefull streching and even using braces and anti-inflamitory medicine are much more effective than better gear.
