Upton Store Info.....

Folks, I know this is probably a "six of one, half dozen of the other", but wanted some general opinions. I'm seriously thinking of ordering an Upton bass, have a lot of questions about various things before I make the decision. If it wasn't a huge deal to travel to either of their stores (Boston or Stonington), would you recommend one over the other for an initial afternoon visit to try a few, and talk to the guys? I'd probably take a drive out for an overnight, and plan on being there for a while. Any preferences on who you'd talk to with questions & suggestions?

Thanks for any input!

I believe the Boston location is only open on certain days. I would contact Upton and let them know what you're looking for and let them tell you what they have and which location has what. I would think that the CT location may have more and it is the location they do the builds.

I have been to their old location in Mystic before they moved to Stonington and before they had the Boston location. I've been meaning to get to the Boston location but whenever I'm in the city, it's usually on a day that they're closed or I'm too busy to get over there.

Agreed. I suggest that you call the Stonington location and talk to Gary Upton or Eric Roy. They can answer your question far more authoritatively than can anyone here. I believe they have more of the vintage and used basses in Boston but I could be wrong.

I stopped in the Boston showroom on Friday. They had one Upton Standard there (an older one), some Shen's and a bunch of vintage basses. If you are hoping to look over a bigger slice of their line, I don't think you can do it there. I talked to a gentleman named Jack and he was very helpful.

The nice thing about the CT store is that you can ask to tour their shop. It really hits home to witness the personal effort that each craftsman puts into the basses they're working on.

I shook the hands of the guys that were going to be building my bass. That's pretty cool... - j
