Smile Upton Willow

Any idea if this instrument would be ideal for a classical University student in his final years? My budget is under 10k, I currently have a Xue Chang Sun bass that sounds good, not sure if this bass would be much of a step up. Comments plz!

please, don't even think about spending 7500 on a bass without trying it and comparing it with a lot of other basses.

+1 on what Philip said.

If you're making that kind of move, get a bus/train/plane ticket and compare in person. Man, you're talking about your long-term musical partner, right?

I've heard the bass personally. Only pizz though. Beautiful warm tone and projection....as much of that as you can
get from hearing the bass in the small front room at Uptons.

Totally agree with the posters above though. For that kind of money you really should go hear/play an instrument for yourself.

Much as I am a fan of Upton Bass, in that price range there is so much from which to choose that you should buy whatever bass speaks to you. I agree that, if you are considering it, hop on a plane and play it.

My personal opinion: I have owned new as well as old basses. While I liked the new basses I was happier with old ones. Your choice.

Calvin,

Our Willow is a bass with that real "Italian sound" I promise IF you make the trip it will be well worth it. We can pick you up at T F Green airport or the Amtrack right here in Mystic.

That bass is beautiful! I'll have to make a trip down to Mystic to hear it.

New Upton willow bass

That looks like my kind of bass. Before I got onto the Paesold 4/4 models, I used to personally play the flatback Carcassi models from JRMusic. I'm a big fan of the string length and general body dimensions, especially the wide C bout. I like the big low end of willow flatback Baker model basses from Kolstein when I carried that line. I like the willow Shens. With the nice finish, great ebony quality, and my favorite tuners, this kind of instrument really makes my mouth water. Gary and Eric have done a great thing! You get a big vote of confidence from me.
