Von aue Gunter Basses at Robertsons

Hey guys, I just played a Von aue Gunter bass at Robertsons during ISB. The tag says it was made in Germany this year. I really liked the loudness of the bass, but that made the tone just a little bit boxy. I was wondering if anyone owns a copy by the same maker and if it has opened up more and rounded out the sound as it matured. Thanks to All!

Is that one of the 10K shop basses Robertson's imports and finishes in house? I played that one and it felt great, easy to get around on, but the sound was a bit one dimensional and kind of dead, at least from the player's position. I wouldn't expect miracles with it "opening up" and having a radically different sound. Maybe some brighter strings like spiros would help. If you're not crazy about it now, pass...IMO, but you might ask them to switch strings.

Sorry to bring up a dead thread, but I own one of these basses I bought it at the 2009 ISB convention. I initially had the same impression as you (I thought it sounded plain when I played it) but in a blind test it won against a martin shop bass (my other option). I ended up buying it and I'm glad I did! It started to open up after about four months of playing, and three years later, it sounds amazing.

Gunter von Aue? I've never heard of this maker here in Germany.
