What can you tell me about this bass?

Went to another local shop today and they had a nice bass. The owner said it was a German bass. The tag said George Herman. That might have not been the right spelling.

I can't find much on these basses. This bass is used but looks like it is in mint shape. New strings. Cant remember the brand but said they are like $200. Bass is setup with low action.

Other things is upgraded tailpiece wire and I think he said the end pin was graphite? It looked thicker than what I have been seeing.

Ebony fingerboard and tailpiece....not "ebonized". Also has adjustable bridge.

I just played open strings and it sounded really nice. The owner played it and it even sounded nicer. Said he could set the bass up to my style.

So wondering if you guys can give a little info on this bass? Not finding much doing searches.

Steve

This isn't much, but here's a brief thread.

George Herman Stradivarius copy

Unfortunately... your description covers a pretty broad swath of basses. In other words, it could be a great bass or a dog house. Also, there are a lot of odd brands, for instance "house brands" of shops that import basses from overseas. This isn't necessarily a bad sign.

Does the shop deal primarily in basses? If it's a reputable bass luthier's shop, that's a good sign. If not, you'd be well served to find a player or teacher who could evaluate the bass for you.
