what is this ....PLEASE HELP

I just picked this up, and do not know what i have.
and information would be appreciated.
I was looking for a bass, want to learn to play, and a friend gave this to me.
not sure if its what i need to learn on, but maybe i can sell it so that i can get what i need.

Looks like an early version of this. I saw Viktor Krauss play one with Lyle Lovette a few years ago.

I've seen old pics of Stanley Clarke with something like that, I think. Maybe I even saw him play it once? Must have been a loooong time ago.
