What is your favorite well padded, but light bag?

While we're on the subject of bass bags lately, what is your favorite well padded, but light bag?

I need a lighter bag for my very heavy bass that will stand up to constant use and is well padded.

Is the deluxe Mooradian my best option?

Thanks, BG

"Grasshopper", LOL! Thanks Jason. I guess we BOTH know what it's like to schlepp our heavy Yankee basses around as Kung Fu deciples.

I vote Mooradian too. My Reunion Blues bag is the best I have ever had but light it is not. The Mooradian is my next purchase as well.

I just got a Mooradian standard case for my bass and it works wonderfully. The deluxe bag with the padded shoulder strap would be useful, but the extra 1/4 inch of padding is not really needed, in my opinion. Its already pretty thick!

I have a no-name, generic Mooradian style bag, it's worked and held up great the short time I've had it. The only problem with it is that it's apparently made for a lefty which makes it kinda hard to put on and take off. I'm thinking about getting a real Mooradian. Are the deluxe ones really that much better? I like that they come in silver as well as black because of the heat where I'm living.

The Deluxe Mooradians seem to be made better than the regular Mooradians. They are thicker and have a pocket for the endpin. I think there are a few other differences but I can't think of them off the top of my head.

I had a regular Mooradian case when I was in high school and sold it with the bass that I was using back then. When I bought my Tom Martin it came with a great case from London. http://www.contrabass.co.uk/basscovers.htm#newimage
Someone spilled coffee on the zipper and the zipper gradually broke. This is one of the sturdiest cases that I have come across. The handles are definitely not coming off without a fight.

After I couldn't use that case anymore I got a Deluxe Mooradian and have been very happy with it. I've been using it for 2-3 years now and it shows no signs of wearing out.

Mooradian as well. Bought 5 years ago no wear and tear yet- never leave home without it.

That's a Kolstein bag. I have a standard Mooradian bag for 3 years now and the only problem with it is the bottom front pocket. The zipper broke.

It's definitely not a Kolstein bag. The quality of construction is a lot higher. They do have pockets and straps in a lot of the same places though.

Also about my Mooradian bag, I realized that the threads at the bottom of the bow case pocket are coming undone. That's an easy fix though.

Yes, that's the one I'm looking to replace now. It's a sturdy enough case (4 years of heavy usage w/o any zipper or tear issues), but it's too heavy and although the padding is thick, it curiously has no padding around the upper bouts in the back.
In the picture you posted you can even see this lack of padding in this area. Look just to the left of the shoulder strap on the black case. Do you see the edges of the back upper bout poking thru? I have some minor dings that my Prescott has endured from car doors and the like in this area because of this.

This bass w/ that case, bow and wheel weighs in at just about 40lbs! And this is after changing a riduculously heavy endpin. I'm looking to save weight wherever I can.

I think the Mooradian in comparison will save atleast 2-3 lbs.

I'm on my second Mooradian w/ my German bass, but the Prescott's wide ribs just won't fit in this 3/4 Deluxe. I remember my first one having a front pocket zipper issues as well (a bunch of years ago) and eventually the main zipper went too. But I believe that was the regular and not the Deluxe model. This newer one has been great after a long while now. I'll prolly end up buying a larger Deluxe Mooradian model unless someone knows of something as good which is as light or lighter.

Oh, on first look they seemed identical. Maybe they are from the same factory?

+1 Mooradian

I've had mine for 8+ years. So far I've had to have the top seam (top of the scroll) restitched (at a shoe repair shop for next to nothing), and the bridge strap, which I use all the time loading in and out of the car, sewn back on (similar shop charged me a fiver!). The zipper tab came off years ago, but it's such a large, sturdy zipper that's it's almost easier to do up this way. When this case eventually wears out I'll definitely be getting another.

Take a look at the Messina bags before you buy. I have one and it is rock solid. I have no idea if it is heavy or light, but it is a top quality bag.

I concur on the Messina bag, I got mine in 2000 (maybe a year earlier or later) and it's still going strong. I got mine through Andy Stetson's shop by mail, maybe more places are carrying them now?
