Where is the best place to buy an Upright?

Used or new? If I am looking to spend $800-$1000, what brand should I look for? Obviously I can get more bang for the busk if I buy used. I've looked in the classifieds but I need to find something within 100 miles if I have to pick up.

Start here.

Then c'mon back with any unanswered questions. IMO, you should set the budget minimum at $1200-$1500. Especially if buying new, you are not likely to find a decent instrument delivered with a good setup for less than that.

Greetings!

It's worth a trip to Grand Rapids to visit The Guarneri House (www.guarnerihouse.com). This is Steven Riley's shop. I don't know what his "entry level" bases go for, but it's a neat place and they'll get you started. Be sure to call to schedule an appointment.

Good luck and best regards!

Jim

Hey Britt, don't know if you are still looking or not but talk to Ed Fedewa if you get a chance. He may know of one floating around. Let me know if you need his number.

I'd go with used, and I also agree with drurb on the budget. And look here/put up an ad: http://www.craigslist.org

remember to switch the location to yours.

A used bass, if cared for properly, would be worth more than if it were new.

Yes it's funny - what the OP said, would apply to buying a BG - but it's almost the opposite for buying a DB!

So there are lots of cheap, new DBs around, with brand names - especially from China - but an old, un-branded, bass almost always costs a lot more!
