Upton Bass
KC Strings
Kolstein Basses
AES Basses Arnold Schnitzer
Bob Gollihur
I am sure other folks with chime in with more suggestions, but I hope this helps get you started. By the way, guitar stores are not a good place to look. |

If you have to buy from a distance, you can be sure Upton Bass will take care of you and that it will be properly setup and playable out of the box. |

Add Lemur Music to Jakes list of on-line double bass resources.
You are already ahead of the game by recognising that Sam Ash and similar stores DO NOT sell decent double basses. The recommendation to find a good local luthier is a good one - these basses take a bit of special care and feeding, and having a good relationship with a luthier you can trust is essential.
Check out Jake's links, read the newbie sections at the top of each of these forums, and ask questions here about anything you can't find out about there.
Oh, and if you fill in your location in your TB profile there may well be someone here that can offer particular help for you locally.
Welcome,
Andy |

| | | | i am not a rich man.. so i would not be able to afford any classic english basses as much as i would love to own a piece of great british history. from what i understand is that the new basses that are made my british luthiers are far more cheaper than the old ones so i would like to have any information on the contacts of these luthiers in the uk that make great new db's |

Volker Nahrmann in Boston has one of their Busetto models and Henry Reidstra in Canada carries their lower priced student models. |

But if we're talking old English basses available in the UK, then it's probably £15k and up!!
[PS double for $]

I meet UK Jazz pros and they are always telling me how they got their bass cheaply - but I think these are never advertised and just get mentioned to them as they are "known" players....
I was at Jazz Summerschool last week and the DB tutor I was with, had just found a 1920s French bass very cheaply and was trying it out, he encouraged me to try it - I never see these things!!
But if I see any £15k English basses - I promise to pass the details on!!

'Paul N. Bryant, Hastings, England, No. 50'* An English double bass for sale for under $9,500!* This is his Solo (Gabrielli) model but instead of the usual maple flat back, this one he made with a carved poplar back. The poplar tends to give it a warm and darker tone.* Even though they are smaller 3/4 size basses, they are extremely responsive and big sounding.* All his instruments tend to have more sloped shoulders to accommodate 21st. century playing.* The approximate measurements of the bass: the string length 41", the length of back 42 1/2", the upper bouts 19" and the lower bouts 25".*
We have sold a hand full of these Bryants and have had very, very positive feedback with them.* All are painstakingly done by his hands and there are no two the same!* They are made more like the old fashioned way: One person making them from beginning to end and without the typical assortment of mega power tools often associated with most contemporary makers.* The bass pictured below is his new Matteo Gofriller bass.* It is a good orchestra size bass.* Again, rounded (carved) back, English style tuners, slightly sloped shoulders.* The back is 45", the lower bouts are 27 1/2", upper bout shoulders are 20" with the string length of 42".* This is a great bass for someone with a limited price range, but needs a good bass for orchestra auditions.* This one has a huge, bold sound that one would expect copying such a big, legendary Italian bass.*Both basses now in stock!* For the money, these basses are a real bargain.* Of all the new upright basses coming in from England, these are the best sounding, and best made basses and sell for about half the price.* Gofriller model is SOLD. |

The trouble for me was the wait/time lag - so the process is that you give Paul Bryant a deposit and then he makes a bass for you, as he can - of course if you see one "ready-made" then this would be different!
Louis - is there a link to a website - that might help some people?
