where do i start !!!

hey everyone. I currently play electric bass (kensmith), but i would love to get an upright. i have played a few in stores such as samash but i know those basses arent too good. however, i cant tell the difference between a good upright bass and a bad one. also, my parents are willing to get me one if i finish my degree at community college. what kind of an upright would you guys say i should start with. who makes them, and where can i get one. thanks

You can do fairly well for that price, but you will not be getting the "Ken Smith" equivalent for that kind of money, so as long as you understand that you should be OK with what your budget will buy. I play Jens Ritter EBG's and my double bass cost a fraction of what either of my two Ritters did, but I still have a very good sounding, durable and playable double bass. The carved Kremona from Gollihur (my choice) is within your budget as are some of Upton's models, & the Christopher hybrids. Lemur in California has some models that come within that range also. I think the New Standards are a little above your range but check them out too.

Check out the Shen's, Christopher's, Englehardt's. As everybody has already said, There are several online shops that carry their own brand. Check out Upton, Gollihur, Lemur. Do a search on this site for some really good advice. As you have already noticed, Ken Smith resides here as well. Keep that in mind, and Take the good advice from these people. Try your best to seperate Opinion from Fact. Good luck!
