Where to start

I'm a professional electric bass player, and now its time for me to expand my playing to the double bass. I want to be able to play both with fingers and a bow. I have no idea what so ever to start. should i go 1/2, 3/4, full sized, electric, acoustic? Where should i purchase it/what are the price ranges for double basses.

Open to all suggestions.

thanks

A good starting point would be the URB newbie threads.

good decision

Hi Dubraw-Luthier, you've already been referred to the newbie links, which is a good place to start.

My quick and terse advice:

-- rent for a little while, at least until you get a sense of what you are looking for in a bass.
-- a good professional setup (ideally by a luthier who works on basses regularly) is extremely important for enjoying playing your DB. Setup is more important than brand or carved vs ply etc for a beginner.
-- find teacher right away, he/she can help you find a decent bass with the right setup, choose german or french bow, get your technique right the first time, etc. etc.

To answer your questions: 3/4 is the "normal" size for a DB. Also, an electric upright is a different animal, so my advice would be to play a normal (acoustic) DB if that's what you want to learn to play. Price range starts around 1500 for a decent beginner bass. The cheap stuff you see on ebay and at guitar stores is generally considered to be
unserviceable and will most likely be more of a pain in the ass than a source of enjoyment and musical development.

Tell us where you are located (or put it in your profile), you might get some good recommendations or better advice in general if you do this.

^^^ This advice is spot-on! Although... carved vs. ply is quite important.
