Well, the ad is dishonest, for starters. It's a plywood bass.

It's plywood... They didn't even do a good job of faking it with veneer :P
If you look through upton videos on YouTube there are some horror stories of these types of basses, but fully carved and much more expensive. I can't imagine these being to much better.
Plus, $500 is half way to a nice used plywood bass, best to save I would think.

It says on the posting "unused, unopened." That means it's never been set up. After shipping and set up, you have a $900 turd.

I'll bet that with strings, you reach $1000+.

Well, at least with that shiny finish, its a glazed turd...

In case we sound like elitist wretches, have you seen this?

Snobbery, and why you're probably right

The short version; I wouldn't buy it. IMHO, you might seriously consider a Shen, if you really have $1000 to spend...

I don't think they lied, someone had to "select" the plywood lol. Even tho I got my bass on ebay and after I set it up, got another bridge n strings, I'm very happy with it, I'd still recommend playing one before buying. You'll also notice on ebay that the basses with the cheapest prices charge the most shipping. I got the Cecilio, 499.99 with free shipping and love it, but still, not the best way to buy if you have other options, mostly because there's no way to tell how good or bad thier quality control is, and if you're going to do the setup yourself, what do you do if the fingerboard needs planed etc? The only basses that do come set up are the ones from a dealer/manufacturer

What do you mean by "if"?

It must be an amazing instrument. Nearly every feature gets an exclamation point or two.

Plywood, laminate, etc. There are many worthy instruments made of that type of wood. The eBay specials are not among them. Read the newbie links here. They contain a wealth of information. The topic of this thread gets discussed here at least 3,146 times a year.

Paul, the fingerboard on mine did not need planed, it's a nice instrument, but I still don't recommend buying that way if you have a choice

Well, now, I just watched this video and saw a very affordable American made bass...

YouTube - Bogdon Box Bass duel with Double Bass

Maybe this is the best way to get a cheap bass?

A nice sounding box... Now just get ahold of a cardboard bow and it's ready for the orchestra!
