would this be like spreading manure from a cadillac?

I was wondering- has anyonwe put an extension on their Chirstopher or Shen? In this particular case mine's a hybrid, not even one of the fully carved models. Would this be bad form?

I just saw a listing in the 2xbasslist for a kay with an extension, and that just got me thinking about whether or not anyone else has put an extension on a similar grade chinese instrument. I just had it worked over, and simply love the tone now. I wouldn't have considered going in this direction before I had the adjustments made, but now I can actually hear some "woody" potential in the instruments tone.

just curious, and having a little G.A.S.

It seems pointless to me. If you're adding an extension which costs almost as much as the bass itself, what's the point? I suppose I could understand if someone was short on money, but it wouldn't be something I would ever do.

Would it matter if I was talking about well sub 1k for a fingered extension?

If I were you, I would save up my money and put an extension on something of a higher quality. If you're playing in a situation where you would need a C extension, chances are you probably want a nicer bass than a Shen or a Christopher. If you can't get a nicer bass, then do what you have to do. Best of luck.

If it gets you closer to the way a bass sounds in your head...go for it.

Seems to me that if you want/need to play with an extension, then go for it. While I understand the tendency to recommend against an expensive modification to a not-so-expensive instrument, it makes less sense not to have the capability if that is what you are after. If you were to wait until you could afford a more expensive instrument AND an extension, the wait could be a long one.

The real question is why you are interested in an extension.

If resale value means anything to you, I doubt you'll get your investment cost back.

Thanks Ken.

The situation is that this is probably the bass that is going to have to do me for a while since I really am just a hobbyist with no real chance of making money from this thing in the forseeable future. I do play in a local symphony, and there are times when it would be nice to have that extra bit of room to play with. I would also be the only one in the symphony with an extension (so I might not feel so bad about stinking up the place if I could add something no one else could!)
