Beautiful to hear from you!
I can't find the words to tell you how proud I am of what you're doing.
The bass looks great....however, your shop looks suspiciously clean for a god damn luthier.

I was in the Hilton Head area 2 years ago and saw this Gentleman by the name of Ben Tucker play. Was blown away by his playing and his sound and went to see him a second time. His bass looked as it was used as a landing craft at Iwo Jima. I believe that he mentioned that it was around 200 years old and was made in Austria and he called it a "Trivolian" ??? Not really sure about that name and should have written down the details. Everytime I see a double bass, I think of him and his bass and obviously his playing. He did tell me what it was appraised for and that is the value of all my gear times five !!!!

I imagine it was a Tyrolean bass, from Tyrol that is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyrol
As you can see, you're likely to learn a lot more over here on the DB side of the forum... Now stop aspiring: find a teacher, buy a bass, and get to it!

Jim | Thanks for the history lesson.
I have been on the lookout for a starter double bass. I am lucky to have friends who play professionally and have background in repair and setup. Even have an instructor lined up who is 10 minutes away.

Peter let me play it once and the sound just filled the hall and melted my soul. I definitly wouldn't mind playing that bass every day. | It's pretty fragile, I gather.
However, Bob Olsen in Boston has made a copy, and was last time I saw him making another. He says the copy is better than the original is now (because it's sound, so you can string it right and play it as hard as you like, not because he's a genius builder, although I suspect he is). I'd believe that, it's a phenomenal bass.
However, I think he's done one better than that... a copy of some anonymous mid-19th century German bass that is just stupendous. Huge, deep sound and feels like there's an amp in there somewhere, it's so loud. I think that's my dream bass. |

Half the fun of the guerneri is it's history, but that's only if you believe it is really a guerneri. The only reason no one is playing it is because only the "principle" is allowed to play it, and MnOrch doesn't have a principle right now. That and I think that Fora likes his own bass more. |

The G is capitalized because it's a Persons name.
