My guess is that this is a mandobass (possibly by Vega) that was retrofitted with a Rick horseshoe pickup. Probably done in the latter half of the 1930s.

additional info

FYI: this bass has a 33" scale (!), it´s fretted (with a flat fingerboard) and the pickup seems to be installed when the instrument was built, not retro fitted. The plot thickens...
