Any idea what this is?

First of all, I apologize for straying away from the electric bass forum, but this is a question for all the upright guys here. I ran across this EUB on my local craigslist and again on Evil-Bay, and I was wondering what it was. I asked the seller, but for some reason they gave me the name of a trombone so I'm at a loss. Any ideas?:

Ebay Link

Thanks in advance, gentlemen.

His spelling in all of his ads is terrible. I assumed English was not his first language (Czech) etc then I saw he was based in Texas :s

Electric Upright

That sure is an interesting instrument - nice curves and wood - if it sounds as cool as it looks, seems like you can't go wrong if an EUB at this price is what you're looking for.

You may be delayed in trying to get to the bar on set breaks having to answer all the questions I'm sure you'll get about this instrument.

If it doesn't work out check out the NS WAV4 - I just got one of the new ones and I think they've worked out the kinks in them, and it's priced about the same.

Good luck

The Sojing AKA "crazy eight" EUB

That bass is another one of the CCB/EUB's coming out of China.

The bass is a conversation piece and it's okay for what it is. Although it is a thinline style it does take up a lot of room in most any kind of vehicle known to man.

The feel of te neck is close to a regular upright but the sound is all from the pickup.

You can get any label put on them if you buy enough. Some guy out of Nashville was trying to sell them a couple years ago. The guy from Houston has been selling them for the last few years on Ebay.

But ya know, if you've gotta play "blueglass music," this might be your only option

Many thanks, gentlemen. Considering I'd be using it for a rock group, it sounds like it'd do what I need, but I'm still skeptical about a bass I've never played before. I dunno, maybe I'll see if the seller will let me try it out for a couple minutes.

Sojing

I picked one up from the same guy in a few years back. Couldn't try it out first since I'm in Florida so I was just winging it. It is susceptible to shipping damage, mine came with the neck broken but I mailed it back and was sent a replacement in good condition with no problem from the seller.

The action came a bit high so I had to take it down some, but other than that it has played fine and is definitely an attention grabber. I mix it in for about 6 tunes a night with a classic rock-dance 5 piece group I'm playing with. I always get asked about it at every show.

Once I lowered the action, it plays just like a smooth DB. The back of the neck comes laquered so I sanded it down myself to get that buttery feel.

But at the price, if you are looking for something unique that also plays well, I would reccomend it. Ask anything else you'd like about it.

Jeez... It's definitely an attention grabber, isn't it...

So as far as playability goes, it feels about as good as a budget EUB can feel? But how about the pickup? The guy told me it has a Wilkinson piezo in it, how's that sound through an amp? And how about the "5 band EQ" he was talking about?

I played a classic Ampeg baby bass for many years, but as I'm 6' 4", I prefer something of a DB size rather than a 3/4. To tell you the truth, since I lowered the action on this one, it plays as good as any top DB or any EUB I have tried.

It's more of a 3-band EQ with presence. You need to play with it a little bit, but you can get the sound you want. Either a pretty good facsimile DB sound, but then turn up some extra presence to it for more strength, which I do since I play with an electric group more than a big band/jazz orchestra, and you can hold your own with the rest of the band.

One thing I remember doing to lower the action, besides sanding down the bridge a bit, was to remove the plastic sheath that seperated the bottom of the bridge from the pickup. There's a pretty solid roof on top of the pickup itself anyway and it brought more presence to the sound by doing that as well as lowering the action substantially to a much better playabilty position.
