I also found a trim pot on the pan pot board, which is separate from the preamp board. I'm curious as to what this trim pot is for | Shouldn't hurt anything to monkey around it, in fact why not just turn the trim pot back and forth a few times in case there is some oxidation in the contacts?!
If you decide to chuck the pan pot for two independent outputs, I think the sound will be better. Of course you will need a two channel amp or outboard mixer to do this.....

Jill contacted me today and stated that my Bug was a custom order / one off. And that the trim pot may be used to balance the output between the two transducers. The output of the two pups sounds even to me, so I won't be touching that one. I'm looking forward to my first practice with a trio tonight, acoustic guitar and percussion; should sound great.

| | | I've been reading this thread for sometime (because I own a Gypsy and am a novice salsa bass player - actually, I play piano).
Anyhow, when I purchased my Azola Gypsy, it didn't come with the mambo mute. Because my primary use for the bass is latin/salsa music, I decided to order a mambo mute.
I thought it would be as simple as calling Jill and Steve up, ordering the mute and having that piece sent to me.
I was told that now the process for getting the mute had changed and I had to send back my bass to them to be custom fitted.
At first I was reluctant, and even thought of making my own mute.
But after Jill's persuasion, I decided to send it. I recently got pictures sent of it and sound clips and the new design totally makes sense! (I even thought of a concept similar to this before I decided to send the bass back to them).
Here are the pictures - I will try to send the sound clip later: Attachment 146714 |

I think Mark was having some trouble with it. This is a Mahogany solid-body 34" scale length Gypsy, outfitted with DR strings. First you'll just hear the bass with everything set flat. Then, the Mambo Mute is engaged (a quick turn of the wheel), and the bass offers a more percussive Latin flavor, still with everything set flat. The Latin flavor can be emphasized with the on-board preamp controls and/or amplifier settings (maximize bass, minimize treble) ... not to mention the player's technique, of course : )
Everyone's quest is different ... just wanted to provide more info for those who need it.
Sincerely,
Jill (and Steve too, of course) www.azola.com |

I'd always assumed that it was constructed like an upright in order to get close to that upright sound. But given it's heritage from the Baby Bass, and what I've read recently, I'm starting to wonder if it's more aimed towards that Baby Bass percussiveness, rather than the longer sustain you might expect from an amplified upright.
Can anyone put me straight ?
FWIW this is the bridge on the bass I'm particularly interested in
Andy

The reissue is based on the Ampeg Baby Bass and is pretty thumpy, although the inclusion of a bridge wing pickup does increase the versatility of the instrument. The Acoustic Baby Bass is a different instrument. It is indeed designed to get the sound of an amplified double bass and does so beautifully. |

I've bookmarked the page from Steve's website. Every now and then I look and drool GAS is a terrible thing. Congrats on a beautiful bass. |

I have Spiros wiech I think (purple peg box) but would like to change them. I've been reading around posts and so far been attracted to 1)spiro solos 2)dominant solos and a kinda questionable 3) super flexible solos..? I want a lighter tension so I can move around the instrument more freely without "thump" I want the G to be full and also the thumb register to cut with sustain and body..so what do you buggers use and what do you think? |

My experience is that the better I get on upright, the better I am on my Bugbass. The Bugbass is a great for when I don't want to haul around a full-size acoustic bass. There was a period when I sold my upright and my Bugbass did all my upright duties. I ended up buying another upright because there's no substitute for an acoustic instrument. EUBs are good for many things but they won't help you with your acoustic tone. But, if it starts you down the road, it sure is a fun way to go.

This now my bass of choice anytime I'd rather not play my upright, be it for ease of transport or just because I'm in the mood for a different sound than my upright bass provides. This is my second Azola, several years ago I had owned a different Lightning Bug that I played for several months then sold. That was a decision that I instantly regretted, as I quickly came to miss both the convienance and the big sound that the Azola could deliver. I'm now happy to report that I recently found a used Lightning Bug in very good condition. I've brought the bass to several gigs allready and have been having a ball playing it! The Azolas really make great basses and I'm quite proud to be playing one again. |
