Since you are so close to Azola's Rancho Bajo, you should definitely make a visit.
The customer (and even non-customer) support is second to none! |

I've had an Azola Bugbass, currently play an Azola Deco and am in the process of commissioning a custom short scale acoustic upright. You won't regret a visit to the Rancho or buying a bass from them. You're very lucky being in the market for a Baby Bass and being so close to the ultimate source. |

| | | | I had a Custom Acoustic Baby Bass and now have a Bugbass II. His work is as good as it gets...really head and shoulders above every other EUB I've tried (and I've tried many.) |

I called Jill and she sent me several tuners to check out (all for free!). I found the one that did the job and all is cool.
So check them out, for sure!

It's got a great tone electrically and is loud enough to practice acoustically. Instead of an adjustable bridge, the neck features a tilt-angle adjustment to lower the action which is very effective and much easier than changing the bridge height. It's got twin-piezo pickups (one under each bridge foot) and has a really growly and acoustic-like tone. Very unlike the more electric sound you typically get out of the stick basses. It still doesn't have the bloom of my german Schroetter bass but it's pretty amazing sounding. It manages to get the clankyness when you hit the strings really hard like a real DB and sounds great for jazz, salsa/lating and even blues. The fingerboard is very straight and you can lower the action ridiculously low to faciliate playing bop solos if you're so inclined (I leave that to electric bass
Workmanship if flawless and the woods are just unreal. Flamed swamp ash top and an unreal fingerboard made from macassar ebony. Possibly the most gorgeous fingerboard I've ever seen.
It has an end-pin and an adjustable body arm for leaning into when playing.
I'll post more information and clips later.

I've been playing an original BugBass (just a BassMax and passive volume) for almost seven years now. My old American Standard upright doesn't get out any more, because the Bug beats it for playability, size, volume, sound definition...just about everything.
Enjoy! |

If you want traditional ampeg baby bass sound or a more DB sound for flexibility,I would highly recommend this gem.
good luck |

This particular model is made with an ash back and ribs and a carved spruce top. It has more of the DB vibe than the solid body version, as you would expect. http://azola.com/sys-tmpl/acousticbugbass/
I ordered mine with the "modern scoll" and the ebony fingerboard upgrades (which appears to be standard now). I really like the instrument. The portability, sound, and clever string height adjustment in the neck contribute to make it a very nice instrument. I like to play seated, so Steve made me a special bout that is bent at a different angle to accomodate this playing position.
Jill and Steve are absolutely terrific. You will not find better customer service.

Talked with the Azolas. They are very quick to respond. Jill emailed back and forth several times. Tried shimming the pickup to get it into tighter contact with the bridge slot. Ended up installing a K+K Big Twin. It's more of a fretless electric sound. Lots of sustain and mwahh. Thinking of picking up one of the K+K pre's that allow two pickups so I could mix the original with the twin. Maybe get it alittle closer to a DB vibe.
I do find that the bug has alot more string tension than my DB. The pegbox could be longer.
For portabilitys-sake it great though.
I'm without a DB for a few months while my UB lami's being built. That means two months worth of gigs exclusivly on the bug. It'll be a adjustment period getting used to the DB again around christmas. Totally looking forward to it though. |

I also have a semi-hollow (bugbass ii) though mine has an ash instead of spruce top.
I'm also looking for another pickup. I feel the existing pickup sounds thuddy as well. It's funny because acoustically, the instrument sounds wonderful but the pickup doesn't quite do it justice although with my markbass amp, I can roll off some top end and get a more woody tone. I've also noticed that the bugbass has more tension then my DB but I figured it must have heavier strings on it. Not sure what the previous owner put on it.
I have a fishman bp100 pickup on my DB and it sounds fantastic. I was thinking of trying it on the bugbass. Did you have to modify the bugbass bridge to put the K&K pickup on it? |

It has sold ash body, bubinga fingerboard and single BassMax pickup with passive volume control.
The original strings were really twangy and it took several tries before I found something I like. I've used Helicore Hybrid lights for the past couple of years and they're neither thuddy nor twangy.
The neck is really nice and I find it much easier to play than my American Standard upright. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
