Beginning the upright bass!

Hi, I have been playing electric bass for about a year now and want to join the school jazz band. they highly reccomend that I learn to play an upright bass. Im not completely new, ive played my friends double bass before and dabbled with some in shops but i still need to practice way more to become decent. i am thinkin about purchasing an EUB because of the size difference, and cost. the only bass that I have seen that really catches my eye is the palatino ve-550 (the black one) and i hear alot of mixed results. people say its great for beginners and it a good way to start upright bass without the cost or space take up. others say its a worthless piece of crap. Now considering my situation, would this be a decent buy? or is there other eub that look and sound as good for around the same price.
o, and i can use the acoustic upright at school i just want this for learning and personal gigs.
thanks

Borrow the school's at first. Cheap EUBs are hot or miss, and a good "real" DB will cost you A LOT. Save your cash while you borrow for as long as you can, and THEN buy. Then hopefully you will have enough cash to grab a nice bass.

Check the Classifieds!
There are two instruments for under a grand presently:

3/4 Upright Bass + Accessories-Detroit
Hermann Beyer plywood

The latter seems in better condition and is only $750!

Your profile doesn't state where you're located so I don't know which one is nearer.
