Buying a Bass

I have been using fretless electric bass for some time. And I always wanted to play the double bass.

Although I always thought this was too huge of an instrument to carry around or just to leave it at home.

I would like to use it with a couple of effects to experiment with some jazz and rock or play the same Jaco Pastorius tunes.

I am looking for:
- 4 string
- Same length or less than a regular double bass
- less than $500 USD

I read the forums but obviously the threads are biased. Maybe someone that can give some guide.

I don't care about the brand as long as it is not expensive but reliable.

Palatino makes some cheap electric upright basses. I was thinking about getting one but I've heard they are not that good. I think I will try to save for an Eminence.

BTW has anyone out there tried a Palantino? They are a great price but if they suck then I guess not.

Thanks! That's a great thread, sounds positive with the bass max pickup and better strings. I might have to give the bass a try!
