Is ERB right for me

Hi,
I am a relative beginner to upright playing and looking to purchase my own instrument. I am looking for something under 1k and am thinking about going with an ERB simply because I just don't have the room in my apt for a acoustic instrument. I will be playing both jazz and classical etudes/solos. I am not really worried about tone as much as I am about finding a solid instrument to work on the basic fundamentals. It will be used in practice, not performances. What is the best instrument around this price range? I am currently thinking of going with an ergo 5 or 6 string. Any thoughts or recommendations? I did some searching on the site and got a lot of mixed messages.

Thanks!
Matt

Do you mean ERB as in Extended Range Bass, or rather EUB as in Electric Upright Bass?

A electric double bass with 5 or 6 strings, that would make it an EREUB?

But to the original question, you should be concerned with tone. Theres probably an electric bass out there that you love the tone of, and you may even want to use it as a main instrument. Having an instrument you practice on, but not use on gigs seems a little strange.

Sorry, I meant EUB. To further clarify, I am really only an amateur bass player and have no gigs to worry about.
