EUB for a noob

Whats a good EUB for a very budget minded student who already plays electric bass but wants to get into EUB?

Keep in mind, pretty much everyone here knows more about what they're talking about than I do, so if anyone disagrees with something I say, they're probably right.

Have you played upright bass much before? If not, I would suggest seeing if you can use one at a music store, local high school or college, or anyone you know that has one, so you can make sure it's something you want to spend money on. But if you're sure you want to get one, then go for it. What's your price range? Do you want something that can mimic the bass feel, as well as sound? (so not just something like the Dean Pace eub). What are you going to be playing on it? Just plucking bluegrass, jazz, etc. or are you going to be bowing on it?

I haven't played upright at all before. My price range sucks. $400 or less. One of my friends wants me to get one so we can start some kind of metal band and I want one anyway. I intend on playing some Primus stuff on it. I need something that I can pluck and bow.

$400 will likely not get you something you can bow. $700-800 will get you a perfectly decent ERGO or the palatinos look ok for the same price.

Hi,

400 Bucks are not much

I bought my Palatino for 450 Euros at German ebay, maybe you can find a used one for < 400 $

Greetings

You might be able to get a used Ergo at that price. They're pretty cool for the money.

I just noticed they went down $50 on the new prices. $650 4 string, $700 5 and $750 6.
I have been super happy with mine.

Sure you can. Just don't expect to have immaculate acoustic bass sounds.

$400 isn't really enough to get anything that's going to really be different-sounding from an electric bass guitar. Similarly, a lot of the techniques used on bass guitar to sound like Primus aren't really as do-able on an upright, due to the lack of frets. I mean, you can do pop & slap on an upright, but trying to do anything with that level of speed without having good intonation is a recipe for sounding awful, not to mention it sounds different compared to an upright.

I'd suggest using Gollihur's luthier page to find someone who sells uprights in your area and go play one, to see if it's really something you want to learn. Not saying you can't play it or that it's not a sound you want to have, as I love my upright, but your intentions for it may differ from what you'd be able to actually do. They do sound and play different from an upright, and may not be the sound you're looking for.
