Fender equivalent for EUB?

Is there a brand of EUB that's kinda like a Fender? Something that is reliable with good tone yet affordable (ie. not boutique-expensive).

Not really. There are inexpensive brands of EUB, such as Palatino, but they don't have the same kind of reputation for reliability and durability and solid tone that you would expect from a Fender. However they are still worth looking at- read the FAQ here, and search on terms like "inexpensive" to find other recommendations. Also the most recent NS Design EUB is supposed to be a good value.

The Azola Bugbass is a simple, straightforward design, although the price isn't too Fender-ish.
I told Bill Paulin I wanted 'the Telecaster of EUB's' and he made me this: www.fittell.id.au/eub
I would have been happy with a simple slab body, but he prettied it up a bit with nice woods. I'm very happy with the sound.

My band mates (and I too) far prefer the sound of my Zeta crossover to the WAV4. And at 34" scale length, I can play "right out of the box". (I play electric bass and I have trouble sounding competent on 3/4 scale uprights.)

I also get lots of compliments on the style of the instrument, too. "Look, he's playing art sculpture!"
