Buy an Eminence, they come with a fine gig bag,
in fact with the removeable neck model (which I
own) there is a seperate bag for the neck, but
the base gig bag holds the instrument with the neck
attached, its not the most padded bag in the world,
but works just fine for weekly rehearsals etc...

Bought mine with the hardshell case for traveling,
now I no longer have to envy all those cello players

Francois, my EUB is 1.55 cm. long (61"), with the endpin retracted, and the snowboard bag in the picture is 1.65 cm. long (65").
I was thinking to a similar solution because such a case could accomodate my EUB with "classic" bridge (18 cm=7.08" with the instrument body inclusive) and lowered scroll, which are the most exposed and fragile parts of the instrument.

Snowboard bag looks good.

Online research into golf bags seems like 50" is the maximum standard size.

Online research into rifle bags seems like 42" is the maximum standard size.

Online research suggests that fencers use golf bags or 52" hard cases.

Ski bags might also work.

Here's a fishing rod bag that's 6" x 6" x 62" long. bag for your 62" rod heheheheh. I doubt it's a good solution, but it's only $21 and if they have a return policy, you could give it a try.

Soccer equipment bag - this might work if you add padding to it. Equipment bag

One last crazy idea - what about a sleeping bag?

Edit: I see now that you're in Italy - well maybe these US sites won't work for you but maybe the ideas are good.

I couldn't find snowboard or ski bags big enough for my Palatino VE-500 (65" x 12" x 14") and saw several horror stories on the Palatino thread about snapped necks when bagged VE-500's tipped over. With upcoming gigs and no case, I bought two 48" x 12" diameter Quickcrete post forms made of very stiff and durable cardboard to make something like a map tube, with the bottom half running just above the bout and the top half connected to it with an inner sleeve and suitcase latches. Dowels brace each end, followed by a 12" circle of light plywood, topped with foam on top and bottom. Just a little foam on each shoulder and the bridge keeps the bass from moving in the tube. Because it is round, I'm not worried about crushing and it is as light a rigid case as one could have. I posted pics at http://www2.snapfish.com/thumbnailsh...NAME=snapfish/
I've ordered a nylon webbing shoulder strap to replace the piece of rope I've had to use in a pinch. I'm sure I will build a more refined version in the future, but for about $25.00 this is safe, light, and workable.

Valuable advices till now, thanks a lot.
I am reading with great interest and I am having lots of new ideas ... I hope to share some solutions eventually

I've found that Sportube offers interesting products also, such as:

or from the free diving gear side (lucky for them !):

Other than the soccer bag tagged a few posts up, I haven't seen anything that appear to handle the instrument's girth at the widest point (the bridge). These are great ideas, though -- has anyone tried ordering something like the snowboard case to see if the E-500 fits?

At the end I decided to devote myself to a fancy chore of design and high quality Italian tailoring

by getting

- double padded microfiber fabric for raincoats, anoraks and sportswear from textile remnants warehouse: 25 euro
- n. 1 not padded Dakine snowboard bag (old model in cordura or something like that) from local sportswear market: 25 euro
- n. 2 heavy duty zip: 7 euro
- n. 1 pair of scissors
- n. 1 old sewing machine

Now I have my padded EUB bag !

Please note that:
- the bracket of the instruments is removable or can also be fitted to the outer side of the bag
- now I have to fix the internal padded coating … probably I’ll need to find someone with special sewing machine for heavy fabric … but I have no hurry now

I saw these bags on line too late: very nice but infortunately not available in our local store ... I don't know if the bigger ones (i.e. 1600-100 165cm
13.5 x 8.5 x 65" [ 34 x 21 x 165cm ]) could fit your instrument in some way indeed.
