How to get sound like that from an EUB.

Hello, fellow EUBers . Im playing bass for 6 years now, and i also owned an upright, but i sold it because of transportation issues. Now im going to start working on a EUB, which will be designed by me, but constructed by luthier, with my help ( to decrease costs).

It will be 4/4 or 3/4, not yet 100%, it will have 4 strings, and piezzo/magnetic pickup combination. Now, id like to ask you, how to make EUB, so i can get sound like this out:

This is sound of an old Framus TRiumph bass with single coil magnetic pickup, but i used same pickup on my Upright, but it didnt have sound like this.. Ill use magnetic only for Folk music.

The tone is very thumpy.
You'd get that with gut strings.

If you must use a magnetic pickup, then you need to go with steel strings.
The sole steel string with that kind of tone that comes to mind is the Jargar string from Denmark.
Available in three gauges.
Many slappers use them for a dark thumpy tone.
The Dolce (thin) gauge in particular, methinks.

That said, a solid-body EUB with a mag pickup is not likely to sound that way.
At least in my opinion.
You need to get a dark string for that.
With a piezo pickup, you can use any string; steel, synthetic, gut.

When I was experimenting with making an EUB, I assumed I'd use a mag pickup for solid low end and a piezo for top end clarity. Once I figured out how to make a piezo and stick it under the bridge, I got this huge fat sound that made me forget about adding a magnetic pickup.
You might need to roll off some high frequencies with a simple tone control, but in my experience, an under-bridge piezo gives a good balanced sound on a solid-body EUB.
