In need of some EUB advice

I am an electric guy, always have been. But lately, my band has been going in a direction of musical experimentation that would greatly be enhanced if I got into some upright work.
I have had the fretless before, fun and all, but not quite the thing I'm looking for, not exactly. I have plunked around a bit on 3/4 and once on a full scale, just enough to realize that it would be an asset to my repetoire... repertoir? My arsenal.

Here's my things though... I can't do the full body bass, not yet. I have to transition. Plus, I do like some of the aspects of the EUB sound that can be tailored for this band project. And I have a lot of 5 string composed tunes that require a 5 string, low B, if I were to do a full set on one. So, essentially, what I would like to get some input on, is what basses fit that style that I should seek out.

Oh, and I know it's not a cheap world to get into, but I am not a rich man. As much as I'd LOVE an NS bass... unless it's snapped in half, I can't afford it.

Suggestions?

NS WAV4 or WAV5. Under a grand. Made in China, but beautiful wood and build. Plays and sounds great Piz or arco. They have distracting dots on the ebony fingerboard but I just used a black marker to rid them - easily wiped off if I ever wanted to.

What wbout the others, like Kydd or BSX? I've found a few used ones that are in the same price range. The BSX is active. How do those compare?

I suggest you browse the forum a bit.
There's already a lot of info available.
You may begin with this thread:
Is an EUB the right choice for me?

Regards,
François
