String-changing tip for 5-string NS-Design!

Hi guys!

I just changed strings on my 5-string NS-Design, I encountered a problem, here we go:

I bought a 5'er set of D'addario Helicore Hybrids (medium) and put them on, when I got to that fat B-string I encountered the problem. The string-top (with the cloth around) was simply too THICK to go through the hole in the Schaller Tuner! Arrgghh...

Hmmm, what to do? Well, I consulted my bass-guru and he told me to just use a drill and make the hole in the tuner bigger!... It worked; I drilled and smoothened the nasty edges with a round-file and everything's cool. Super strings and super sound!

Just a little tip if you guys should ever encounter something like it.

i had the same problem,
i just removed some of the fabric on the winding and it worked out fine.
one odd thing, tho, the diameter of the string was too large for the metal washer on the underside of the body where the string passes through..
i had to remove the washer. no big deal, i use the anchor ridges on the back, but these minor problems are a pretty sad oversight for an instrument of this caliber.

I agree on your points, I might have been able to do the same as you.

But yeah, nasty issues with an instrument in that price-range.

Welcome to the world of Double Bass - where almost any slight change requires the services of a highly-specialised craftsman - so instruments in the price range of £10k -£50k - but requiring constant maintenance and work !!

woah, no offense, but i definitely do not consider eub double bass at all.
it is a hybrid instrument, as different from double bass as the electric bass guitar imho. i studied db for a period in my youth, as well as eb for the last 20+years and i say this out of respect.
i incorporate techniques that are rooted in both eb and db, but require
development in their own right to approach the design characteristics of the eub. in no way do i desire or attempt to fake a db sound from my eub, it's in a class all it's own, imho.

I think you missed my point there - I was replying specifically to bassisten 's comments and I was just saying that your "slight problem" is nothing compared to what DB players go through!!

He was complaining about an instrument in "that price range" - when I know that NS EUBs go for about £1400 - £2,000 in the UK - whereas DB players can pay between £5k and £50k

- yet still have big problems, which require a lot of work by skilled craftsmen to fix!!

I was just saying that my NSCR5 is far more robust and a lot less trouble than any real DB!!

All I was commenting on was that Bruce's avatar now shows a DB as opposed to an EUB. I assumed he now had a DB. I have an NS EUB and am very happy. Sorry for confusion or taking the thread on a tangent.

I've got both - an NSCR5 for about 2-3 years now and I bought a DB a few months ago - lots about it in DB threads - I think - 'inexpensive basses in UK'...?

Thanks for pointing me to the thread. I enjoyed. I do want a real DB someday as well. I played one years ago in college and really enjoyed working with something that feels so physical.
