Thinking about a switch...

Well, maybe not a switch, but after several years of bass guitar I've been thinking about picking up an EUB (since I already have an amp, and space is a concern). I was looking at the NS Design CR5M, since my primary bass is a 5 string, although my fretless is a 4. So, after reading around a bit my main questions are:

1) Is this a good choice?

2) Should I change the strings from stock?

3) What kind of bow would I need to buy to play this arco? (I have no idea about the difference between German and French bows)

Any other recommendations are welcome, I'm flying completely blind over here in DB territory !!

I'm in the middle of a trade for a CR5M. I'll have it in my hands mid next week. While I've played fretted and fretless bass for years, this is my first try at (any type of) upright.

I know I'll be woodshedding for a bit and any info will go a long way.

I was in the same situation about a year ago.
I think the Steinberger is a good option (although in this country they are much too expensive). If you're not a URB player, the lack of body won't be an issue, and the position markers will be a big help in the transition.

Hi,

If you're coming from bass guitar consider the NS Bass Cello, which has a 34" scale length. Otherwise, it's like the NS CR5M in small (same electrics, etc.) and has the same great tone and playability. You can get the 5th string as C on top or B on the bottom. I used my Bass Cello again last week on the road, after not having used it for awhile. What a cool little axe. Easy to sound great live. It's not a BG, or a DB, or even an EUB, it's just its own category, and it performs beautifully.
