What in the world is that thing?

I've had a Steinberger upright for a couple of years but never played it out. Last night just for a change of pace I used it for a gig. People were talking about it, pointing at it, asking questions about it and just plain asking what it was. I was kind of surprised. Has this happened to you? What's your best answer to this question? Of course, honesty is the best policy, but maybe there's a fun answer too.

A Michael Kelly 5-string Dragonfly acoustic bass. Yeah, I get some eyebrow lifts from that one too.

"What the heck is that thing you're playing?"

..... has been a standard question asked for years.... so frequent in fact that I often talked to people on every break explaining what my bass was. Don't get me wrong, I love talking bass, but there were times when I would miss a much needed moment OFF of the stage. So about 7 years ago I made up a little flyer that I hand out in response to the ever-so-predictable question.....
It looks like this.

This is great. It provides the sort of information I gave people during my break. I'd also be interested in hearing any humorous, less gracious responses to this sort of inquiry.

Humorous? Less than gracious? OK, I'll start....

* It's cute and sounds pretty good, but does this bass make me look fat?

* It's a Swiss Army Bass...

* ....DAYUM!....The rest of it was here when I got set up for the gig....!?!?

* The music store was having a 40% off sale and this was all that was left....

* It's an ironing board with strings....

* ... before I tell you what it is, you have to tell me where YOU work so I can show up and bother you with stupid questions.

* Do I wish I played the piccolo? Well friend, you're gonna wish I played the piccolo when I start shoving this bass up your a$*

ROTFLMAO!!!!!

Reply to statements like; "That's not a real bass":
OK, if I were to take this bass and smash it over your head, would it convince you of the reality of its physical existence?

Cool Discussion . I never thought of it as going into the humorous side of it, but those were some great comebacks.

But on the serious side, isn't one of the reasons we all play an EUB is to get a little more noticed as a musician by bringing something unique to the table and one of the things that goes along with that is getting stopped to be asked "What is that thing?"

LOL! One I can use, too, and not look too silly (still overweight, though) . . .

Yup! It even raises questions around here just to walk into a coffee shop with a regular double bass, while everyone else is stumming guitars.
