****BOTH SOLD**** Thanks guys and thanks Talkbass! Well it pains me to do it but I have to raise some cash quick. Now that I'm building and playing my own basses, I'm selling off 2 of my non-made by me favorites. If you aren't familiar with Bob Frenz he is a master luthier from Columbus Ohio. His construction techniques are varied and unique, each bass is truly one of a kind. I've followed his career for quite a while, and 3 of them I got on Ebay, most from the person that had them custom built. The first one I ever purchased on a whim was the first one I'm selling today. I own 4 of his basses and they have been a great inspiration and models to help me in learning my own building techniques.
I'm letting these go at a steal of a price considering the build quality and the condition that these basses are in, and I will include shipping and insurance to the continental US. Why get a run of the mill bass like every other player on the planet uses, when for less money you can actually own a custom boutique axe! $1100 shipped for either one is my bottom line price, it's a blowout that I will no doubt regret.
OK here we go:
6 string Bass #1 on sale is the first Frenz bass I took a chance on, I never heard of Bob or ever played one of his basses, I was blown away. It is a bolt-on and I have never seen another bolt-on neck from Bob. The body is quite unique too, the center core of the body is maple with what I believe is ash on both sides. It has one of the brightest looking quilted maple tops I have ever seen. The pictures really don't even do it justice. The neck is Birdseye maple with a scarf joint. It has a nice natural dark finish to it. I think the fretboard is a figured Ovankol and the patterns are amazing. The side markers and face markers are birsdeye maple too! I've never seen that before. It even has a detuner on the low B taking it down to an A. EMG pickups and I'm not sure what pre, but I think it's one of the EMG boards. 1 9 volt active electronics, it looks like an early BT seried pre except it's not on a pot. Volume, Pan/Blend Treble boost/cut Bass boost/cut. You can really shape the sounds with the setup. Under the compartment cover it say "Good Luck Bill Robert Frenz".
It has gold Schaller locking straps mounted and I'll include the strap connectors also. Gold Kahler adjustable bridge that is very sturdy and very cool design. 3 1/8" center to center at the bridge and 2 1/16" center to center at the nut. Great balanced body no neck dive, and it's weight is around 9 pounds. It does have a single truss rod that is accessed by removing the neck, but it has been very stable in all the years I've had it. It comes with a custom made wooden case made by Bob himself. The only issue with it is a slight poly scratch that is only visible in the light at the rigth angle, I tried to capture it in one of the photos. Other than that it is in very clean condition. OK here we go with #2: ****SOLD****
6 String Headless Frenz neck-thru. Swamp ash body with Koa melted body on the bottom wing. To me the Ash looks like there is a mineral inclusion and there appears to be several large birdseyes, if that's even possible. Neck is Wenge and Koa 5 piece. The neck is very interesting, straight grained Ovankol or perhaps Koa or Rosewood fretboard, also edged with wenge and a small strip of maple and another under the fretboard, nice contrast. Also it looks like maybe Wenge maybe Rosewood markers from the 12th fret upward. 3 1/8" center to center at the bridge and 1 25/32" center to center at the nut.
Side markers I believe are brass and this does utilize a zero fret. The hardware is ABM on the tuners and the string clamp.
EMG pickups and EMG BQ-A pre, with Volume, Pan/Blend Treble boost/cut Bass boost/cut. Since it's a headless there's neck dive issues at all. It's nice and sleek and weighs in at about 9 pounds.
It comes with a regular Tobias gig bag that protects it fine but you could use a guitar gig bag if you wanted. I will include the strap side buttons as the Dunlop strap locks are recessed and built in. No conditional issues at all and it's absolutely clean. I got this about a year ago from a fellow Tber Bassosaurus and I've used some of his pictures since his are better than mine, thanks Bill!
Phew that was a lot of writing and stuff, thanks for hanging with me and reading all this. Any questions I can answer please let me know.
I'm not going to leave this up for very long and if they don't go right away I'll have to put them on Ebay. I would much rather see some Tber put these awesome basses to good use.

Could i ask?:
the fretboard edge on the 2nd is something ..very similar to 1 th i had designed for a build by a liuther,
Then i given up,as i thought that different wood for edges could color the tone differently string by string (off course you could want that).
By a chance did you notice how that mixed-fretboard affects the sound? i'm very curios about.

And to alexlotta,
I really never noticed any change in sound or feel with the laminated fretboard. I have another Frenz bass with a similar edged fretboard and it plays and sounds great. Maybe it would make a difference if it was fretless.

Thanks though, that is one sweet axe, I dig that pickup combo too.

| | Fan Fret Fan and Builder | | Join Date: Mar 2004 Location: Anytown USA | | | Hey J,
Center to center it's 2 7/8" at the 24th fret, I'll leave it to you if that's tight or not. But yeah it's slap-able up there and I have pretty big hands. As stated the bridge is center to center 3 1/8" and the nut is 2 1/16, so that's not a lot of taper considering it's only losing a little over an inch in 34" scale.
Thanks for the questions, I'm happy to answer any and all questions.
