08 Fender MIA P bass only $700 in Boston!

Sign in to disble this ad
I really shouldn't do this, in fact its downright stupid BUT I just don't play it enough due to the spacing.

This is a totally beauty with the Candy Cola Red & white pearl pickguard. I shouldn't have sold the black original pickguard but I did, all the screws didnt match up with the new one so I just left them out (Didn't want to add holes)

There is a small finger nail sized dent on the edge not shown. The wood is really soft I just barely bumped it on a baby corral & I dented it.

Other than that it plays like a dream, I just set it up.

$700 firmed picked up in the Boston Area. Not shipping at this time
SWEET ORIGINAL FENDER CASE INCLUDED!
Matching American Flag strap also comes with

Just played this bad boy through the Streamliner, what a fantastic combo, you would think a warm bass + a warm amp would be too much mud but I was VERY wrong. A\B'd it vs a Bongo & a Sterling HH & its no contest in the upper mids. The P bass is the only one with warm, round D & G strings... the others have grit, twang which is great but its always there.
Listened to Big Al clips by Ed & found that theres always some grit on that bass as well, not to mention the D & G strings seem weak vs the E. Most likely his EQ but regardless...

This P is staying here. Going Pre-EQ to the house requires the bass to be the tone monster, not the amp. I need the warmth this thing has... now go get your own fools!

Back on market, i just never play it, my Sterling HH & Bongo HHp 5 get more play & the spacing feels awkward. I love the tone, the look, the feel... its a shame it doesn't get played

Heres to global hyperinflation bump!

EDIT: Playing the P tonight. Warm tone throughout the range, especially the upper mids which is why I got it. Its the opposite of my Bongo & Sterling which always has snarl. The P bass is less in your face, more for holding down the pocket & supporting the band\church. Love it. Spacing actually isn't too bad, I remember it being awkward to switch to but that may just be because I'm playing slower gospel stuff tonight & not a big deal to move slowly. I'll enjoy playing this until it goes.

If that's an '08 American Standard P (can't see the whole bridge in the pic, but it looks like their "high-mass vintage" bridge), then it's no wonder the spacing drives you crazy. I understand that you may favor a wider or more narrow general spacing, but:

Despite being called an "adjustable-spacing" bridge, these newer Fender bridges set up for even string spacing only ONE way - using only one combination of saddle slots - and your strings are not in that combination of slots. To get even string spacing with these bridges, you need to space the strings as follows:

On each "barrel" or saddle piece, the threads render four "slots" for strings. Each string has to be in the closest slot to the center (edit: the center of the BASS, not the center of the barrel). So if you number those slots 1 to 4 (from the bass side of each one), your E & A would be in #4, and your D & G would be in #1. This will give you what has been standard Fender spacing since the 50s. This, I believe, should also match your Bongo. The way you have it set up (which slots your strings are in) would make the spacing very wide and uneven, string-to-string.

Actually I should mention that I did a setup on the bass & moved the strings like you said. Its MUCH better & feels so much more natural. I did 3 setups on my basses & I really haven't played the P since but what a difference. The string spacing is much closer
Intonation is solid now as well as very low action

I'll have to see if the spacing is like you say but it feels even... maybe thats why I had so much trouble.

Thanks for the help. I totally forgot I did that, makes more sense why I liked the bass much more last night

Glad that was helpful. I have two of these American Standards, an '08 Jazz and an '11 P. I've owned a number of premium-priced basses & boutique brands over the years, and in terms of go-to, plug-in-and-play instruments, these are up there with any of them. Engineers in studios are instantly happy with them, they sound great on every live gig, and they play really, really well (my Jazz has been Plek'd). I don't think you can touch 'em in their price range, and there are a lot of high-end basses out there that I wouldn't trade my little workingman's Fenders for. Mine are bone stock, and while I've screwed around with mods and pickups and so on as much as anyone in the past, I have no desire to change anything on either of these. Hope Fender has the good sense to leave these models alone for a while. Note: Like any bass from any maker, there is sample variation. IME, they're all decent, and some are real stand-outs. Bought both of mine when I had no intention of buying a new bass. Each of these just jumped out at me as being very sweet. If you have a need for a P, at least occasionally, you might want to think twice about selling this. My two cents.

I'm actually starting to lean your way... I could keep this & get a G&L L2000 for the price of another EBMM (I have a Bongo & a Sterling)

I'm just so surprised at how the string spacing helps. I played it all morning again & it sounded great... I have a jam session for some blues & I'm going to go with it again. My studio guy made me record with a P vs my Sterling H so I know exactly what your talking about.
