1978 Fender Jazz in beautiful root beer brown - feeler/tentative sale

Sign in to disble this ad
This is kind of just a feeler - a temporary loss of sanity or what have you - but I'm listing my 1978 Fender Jazz bass to see if it generates any interest. Lately, this beauty has not been receiving the playtime she deserves.

This bass is not completely original, but all the upgrades were done in the interest of making her the best looking and best sounding Jazz bass possible.

The body is likely Northern Ash as it is rather heavy (the whole bass weighs around 11 lbs on my crummy bathroom scale.) When I got her it was stripped to natural with some sort of clear coating ("fullerplast") over it. I had Pat Wilkins do a total refinish in Root Beer Brown (which has a slight reddish cast in certain light.) I then added an Audere Jazz-plate style preamp. She was routed for a battery box and had a Badass bridge when I got her. Pickups are original as far as I know, as is the pickguard I believe. Neck is all original - BUT - I had Wilkins convert it from a 3 bolt neck to a 4-bolt neck.

The neck is in amazing shape, right down to the chrome. It has a natural flamed maple to the back, very cool looking, nice aged headstock, and pearl block inlays. Like I said, I had it converted to a 4-bolt, so it should fit a standard Fender neck pocket. The neck is in very good shape, with only a few dings here and there. Comes with original chrome tuners which are amazingly shiny given their age.

I do not have the original neck plate or control plate/pots - both sold a long time ago. I don't have the ashtray covers - I put little screws in the holes where they were supposed to go. I added a rosewood thumbrest which I never use but looks kind of cool.

A couple things:

1. At some point, it will be due a refret (depends on how hard you play). The frets do have some life left, and I have been using flatwounds for a year or so. It plays very well, but it's also 34 years old, and the frets have clearly been leveled in the past. The creme binding shows a little wear but looks in pretty good shape, especially for its age.

2. I sanded down the back of the neck to make it smoother. I applied a little liquid wax to give it a sheen but that could be taken off. It originally had a thick gloss. If you want the thick gloss back, you'd have to refinish it. I like the way it feels now but everybody has different neck preferences.

3. I never had the original bridge, and the Badass in the pictures is gone. I have a Hipshot "vintage style" (curved plate) bridge on it now but any Fender 5-hole bridge will work. She had a Gotoh 201 at one point.

Bass will come with with Schaller strap locks installed and I can throw in a Planet Waves strap if you want it. It also comes with the case pictured (a Fender vintage case reissue.)

These generally go for $2000-$2500 even without all the original parts. I've even seen Japanese re-issues going for as much as $2000.

For this beauty, I'll take $1875 $1725 $1675 + shipping or best offer - lower 48 - with the hard case. Paypal is fine as is a money order. I would CONSIDER overseas but you'll have to pay actual shipping and MAYBE get the bass in two pieces (which I'd prefer to avoid.)

Save $100 if you don't want the Audere (but you'll have to supply your own electronics as the Audere is all I have)

Save another $100 if you don't want the hard case.

I reserve the right to come to my senses and pull this thread at any time!

Absolutely no trades on this one.

And the pics...

Case is a reissue Fender/G&G but looks awesome. Couple of scuffs that could be buffed out and I think one minor tear.

You can see the ash grain through the transparent brown finish:

Nice fretboard with binding, pearl block inlays, and natural figuring in the maple:

Nice aged headstock, tuners are STILL shiny, and you can see some of the flame pattern:

Four bolt conversion. Small dark spot right below neck plate is a little flaw in the wood that resulted from the conversion. Feels perfectly smoothy and not very noticeable but just want to give full disclosure. That thing that looks like a scratch on the right side is just a trick of the light. The finish is basically flawless.

Nice grain here. That's another trick of the light on the right cutaway - not a scratch. You can see the dark spot below the neckplate better here. A couple tiny finish scratches in the clear coat here and there. The refinish is only a year old so it's pretty close to perfect.

Tried to get the flame in the maple neck, didn't turn out that well in pics:

More neck:

Thanks, man. I'm getting a little hesitant looking at these pictures - but I've got a convoluted deal in my head and part of that deal involves selling this baby. We'll see, though.

Nice. Let me make a suggestion though -- lose the TI flats and put a proper set of rounds on there. 70s Jazz basses and ladies/childrens gauge flats do not mix IMO. Killer bass, btw

Yeah I think those TI Flats are long gone, though-- pictures are a year old or so. Currently it's string-less and I have to re-install the preamp, which I had temporarily swapped out for a J-Retro, but ended up preferring the Audere on this bass. I've played it with rounds and flats alike - it sounds good no matter what.

"I've even seen Japanese re-issues going for as much as $2000."

They have a Japanese RI of this kind?

There's a '75 Japanese Reissue that has pearl block inlays on a maple or rosewood fretboard. Usually they are natural finished bodies, or sometimes sunburst. I've never seen a root beer brown one. My point was that the Japanese-reissued 70s Jazz basses are sometimes inflated in price. I've seen them go for $400-$2000 on Ebay and elsewhere. They are awesome basses but a fair price would be more like $500-$800.

Actual 70s Fenders of course, now go for $2000-$3500. Mine is much less and in way better shape than most

I've never seen a Japanese bass from any era ever go for $2000 (and I'm on it almost daily). I just sold a 1982 JV Fender '57 for $950. The non-export RI's that are on Ebay are, as you stated, severely inflated in price but still not even close to $2000. More like $1200-$1500 and they are new. I'd like to know where these basses are going for $2000 so I can sell my '75 RI and make 4x as much as I paid for it.

I may be wrong, but I think Mocha is more of an opaque finish. This is a translucent/transparent finish - you can see the grain.

Anyway, there's no official name for this one, because I asked Pat Wilkins to do Root Beer brown - which is what I called it - based on some pictures I sent him. So it's essentially a custom color that I dreamed up

It was on Ebay years ago - so probably just a fluke

Don't-have-to-work-on-MLK-Day-(thank God)-bump!

Another price drop. And I'm still not entirely sure I want to sell this. But if I do...

$1675 + shipping lower 48.

Save $100 if you don't want the Audere (but you'll have to supply your own electronics as the Audere is all I have.)

Save another $100 if you don't want the hard case (I'll find a gig bag to ship it in.)

Thanks guys. Still not 100% sure I want to sell it. I'll know after tonight - I'm checking out a '72 Jazz that could be its replacement. I don't need a '72 *and* a '78 so we'll see which one I like better.

Also -

Open to trades, but only partial ones that involve a significant chunk of $$ on your end - and hoping for something older - like a beat up old Ibanez Roadstar (and I just sold mine too - doh!!) or maybe like a Hagstrom or a Musicmaster or something.....
