1978 Fender Precision all original w/OHSC

Sign in to disble this ad
All original, plays great, plenty of small scratches and some finish wear in the usual spots. Latest dating parts are the pots which are 4th week of 1978 and the neck serial is S8. Last little bit of pickguard at the jack broke off and was reglued, also there is an extra strap hole at the bottom from when the strap button was moved.

$1400 + shipping

More pics coming.

Just bought a postal scale for $60 and it's giving me different readings, I'm going to return it and maybe get another one. It might be 10.5lbs?? with covers and everything on it. Uploading some pics.

My 78 P with a white finish, 3 piece ash body weighs in at 11+ lbs. They aren't exactly a light bass. I stripped mine and gave it a nice natural oil/varnish finish, completely destroying its vintage value, but I like it. It sounds good and looks good.

I had the original hardshell case too but sold it. It was in amazingly good condition.

I got the bass in an even trade for a nice S Yairi flat top acoustic guitar from a guitar player who had the bass but never played it. We were both happy with the trade.

Your bass looks in very good condition for its age.

Thanks, I was afraid it might look too rough because of the close up flash shots, but I figured it's better for someone to get the bass and have it look better than they expected as opposed to the other way around.

That is a lovely bass. I recently acquired a '78 from here on TB and I love it. I am enjoying the heck out of it. The all black Roger Waters look of yours is killer. If I weren't a nut for lightweight basses, I'd be all over this one. Good luck with the sale.

It's a great bass but my '73 P is getting all the playing time, even though it doesn't play as well and is in much rougher shape.

It's 1 5/8 at the nut, shape-wise... I'm not sure how to tell in all honesty

If it's 1 5/8 then it's the standard "B" neck for P's of that period. I have a 78 that looked exactly like this before I added a pickup - the paint's even chipped in the same places! The "B" neck has always fit my hand like a glove. Kinda hard to put into words but I would categorize it as relatively thick front to back, yet not cumbersome, though it can get a little awkward up past about the 12th or 14th fret. If you're used to a skinny (width and thickness) J-bass neck or a wide-and-flat feel like a lot of the more modern basses, it will take some getting used to. But for me it feels it great and I can get around it as quickly as I need to with average sized hands and relatively short fingers.

These maple-board late 70s Ps will give you some serious attack if that's what you're into. Lots more than most people associate with the P-Bass. And mine just sings in the mid and higher registers with sustain for days. They do run towards the heavy side, though.
