1979 Musicman Sabre w/ultra-rare narrow neck option, sweet

December 23rd Update***Price lowered again, open to trade and partial-trade***

This is the hardest sale I've had to make in a while, but I've got medical bills and an upright bass that needs a bit of work, so I'm putting this one on the block.

Musicman offered a narrow width option in the late 70s, but they're quite rare: I've only seen a couple even mentioned online, and this is the only one I've ever seen in person. It's a beautiful neck, J-width, but a bit thicker front-to-back than a typical J. The back of the neck has some dings, but none of them are deep, and the neck feels wonderful in the hand IMO.

Body is very handsome two-piece construction, neck has some nice birds-eye figuring on it. Body condition is very clean, chrome on knobs and control plate still shiny. I think it's a great looking bass, my ideal Musicman look.

Tuners turn smoothly, truss adjusts fine, electronics work/sound wonderful. Recent pro setup, bass plays great. Weight is 8.78 lbs, very light for a Musicman!

These late 70s Sabres have really been appreciating in price of late, with regular-neck models being offered on ebay for close to $3000. The narrow-width option is a rare and IMO very desirable upgrade over the regular neck width, and adds value to the bass in terms of playability--IMO--and undoubtedly in terms of collectibility.

I have what I believe is the OHSC for it, although I'm not certain it's original. The rest of the bass I'm certain is original, having confirmed the neck, body, and pot dates.

Offered for $2750 $2600 $2500 $2400 $2250 shipped in the CONUS with case. Open to cash offers, trade, and partial trade offers.

Nut width measures 1.5". I think Leo was thinking "jazz width".

The top switch is a pickup toggle: neck/both/bridge
Middle switch is rarely used phase switch, thins the output dramatically
Bottom switch is a bright boost.

This bass might be destined for ebay, but I'd rather sell it here if possible...

I've owned an 83 Stingray for ~25 years now, and it has a narrow '79 Sabre fretless neck on it - 1.5" at the nut. AMAZING neck. It was my main bass for many years.

GLWTS!

Free bumpage; I am the original owner of a '79 Stingray with a narrow 1.5" nut width (actually, it's even a tad narrower than that) and they are rare; this is the first Sabre I've seen with one... nice bass....

Looks like a bass that would make you want to play.

I got an amp (Mesa Walkabout) from kittyboy awhile back. He was great to deal with, the amp was exactly as described, and his packing was insane -- overdone, even.

Good luck with the sale!

I had this exact same bass back in the late 70's... Same natural color and neck width - hmm... could it be???

Anyway bump and GLWTS for one of my favorite basses I ever owned.

I know that there's only so much you can tell from a picture, but this, to me, looks SO much nicer in every way that matters than the new ones hanging in Guitar Center. I'd bet it's in a whole different league as a player, as well.

The pickguard is still shiny! And the pole-pieces on the pickups still look good.

H/H pickup configuration... What do the three small toggle switches do?

Mark A, toggle operation is explained in the thread:

The top switch is a pickup toggle: neck/both/bridge
Middle switch is rarely used phase switch, thins the output dramatically
Bottom switch is a bright boost.

D'oh! Guess I just got caught up looking at the pictures. I must have figured that my question was so genius-like that no one would have thought to address it before, especially not a few posts up!
