Offered for sale, a piece of bass history, the Sadowsky SWR
Built in 1988 Roger Sadowsky made this bass for Steve W. Rabe, the founder of SWR Engineering. Thus the SWR on the headstock.
Steve traded Roger a SWR bass rig for this bass, which was featured in a number of SWR ads back in the early 90s. I will include the poster pictured below.
Roger told me that this bass saw allot of NAMM shows in the SWR booth up until Steve sold the company to Fender.
I am the second owner of the bass, the first being Steve Rabe.
The bass itself is a NYC Standard 4. It features a solid Swamp Ash body, maple neck and a beautifully grained Morado fretboard. The tuners and bridge are Schaller, which is what Sadowsky basses sported at the time.
The bass has been back to the Sadowsky shop every ten years since it was made (the dates are written on the backside of the control plate). The first visit was in 1998. I believe then the original Bart preamp was replaced by the new (at the time) Sadowsky preamp. I also think the pickups were changed to newer ones.
In 2008 I send the bass back to Sadowsky for a complete setup and fret polishing. Also I had the volume pot replaced with the 500K pot and added the VTC (Vintage Tone Control).
The bass weighs in around 7.8 lbs, yea a real heavy weight! Also to note, the neck profiles on Sadowsky basses back than were allot thinner than they are now. Where the new Sadowsky basses are like my 72 Jazz neck, this one is more like a newer Fender. Somewhere between my 72 Jazz and a Geddy Lee Jazz.
This bass by all means is a player .and it has been played! All minor, it has it bumps and bruises and some buckle marks on the back. Again nothing major, this is a 25 year old bass. The frets are in excellent condition and it plays like a dream! I did have to replace the quick change battery compartment. My soldering is not the greatest, so that may have to be done better!
I will ship the bass in a SKB hard shell case.
Asking Price: $2775 Shipped (US)
No trades please
The ad the bass was featured in, I will include the poster.
Man, I'll bet this would sound GREAT Through my SWR Mo Bass!!!
Bump for a Fantasy...
This is killing me. I remember when it was taunting me on BassNW.
Maybe it is your destiny to own it!
Great bass... I played it at NAMM waaaay back..
My friend Danny Miranda had a Black one from that era that i used to borrow from time to time to do sessions with in NYC..
LOVE that era neck profile, lightness, and the old Bart pre.... I think you updated the preamp..
This is a Golden Era bass.. Id buy it but ive once again went over budget this year... if it were Jan 1.. Id take it right now.
BUMP up for a spectacular bass!!!
I remember when that ad came out!
Just take it out of next years budget!
I actually have the guitar play ad too. Just have to remember where I put it!
I played this bass when it was sitting in the testing room at SWR in the late '80's. A great axe and a classic Sadowsky. I'm sure it's gotten even better with age.
And sold to a fellow TB'r!
