72 J Daphne blue FT

Sign in to disble this ad

I have a 1972 Fender Jazz, refinished in Daphne blue. Maple board with black binding and blocks. I purchased it a few years ago from a guitar store in Canada for $2450. Here is the information I was given.

Original body
Original neck
Original tuners
replacement p/u's (fender 60's cs)
replacement pickguard
replacement bridge
Pots?

Unbelieveable tone and playabillity. One chip in the paint at the truss rod adjustment screw (done after this pic was taken, I will try to get a new pic soon). I pulled the neck and it is stamped Feb. 73 which is consistant with the information they gave me. I have what may or may not be the original tweed case, but I don't know how to tell for sure. It is pretty beat, but will get it there safely. Or I can ship in an SKB HSC if you would rather go for practicallity over vintage.

As far as trades, I am interrested in (all 4 strings).

MTD 435
Ken Smith Neck thru
Warwick Infinity
Sadowsky NYC
Alembic
Other high end Warwicks (partial trade)
Roscoe (partial trade)
Birdsong (partial trade)

I will entertain other offers.

Thanks for looking

Original neck plate?

Wouldn't this be a 73 Jazz?

I wouldn't know how to tell to be honest. There are serial #'s on it though.

Thanks.

Would you mind PMing me the SN? I don't remember if the SN is on the neckplate or on the headstock in the early 70s for Jazz basses.

Do you have a weight?

If it has a tweed case it's not the original. For pot dating:

http://www.provide.net/~cfh/pots.html

Essentially, if it's Fender, 137(CTS) then 4 digits, year then week

GE- Serial number on the plate, not until late '76 did it switch to headstock

Beautiful bass

I found a couple of sites that date Fender neck plates and this does date to 1972.

Thanks.

Usually the neck plate is the last dated piece on the instrument. Interested in what the potentiometers say.

I have never taken a bass that far appart myself. I guess I can try tomorrow, but like I said in the original post, I dont know if they are original or not. I would guess not since the P/U have been changed out.

Thanks.

The neck plate eariler than the neck stamp.Hmmm interesting. In any case the year would
be the latest date found on the instrument. IE heel stamp.

The pots are not original. I just checked. This bass plays and sounds amazing, seriously. If I didn't have so many Jazz bass' right now I would not let her go. Very light and resonant. My digital scale has her at 7.6 lbs

Here's a pic of each side by side - sonic on the left:

Obviously age and wear is going to make a difference to exact colour tones!
