Benevente Greg Edmundson Custom 5. Modification UPDATE!!

Sign in to disble this ad
For sale/trade is a Benavente Greg Edumndson custom bass

Up FT is truly a one-of-a-kind piece. This bass is a Benavente Greg Edmondson Custom 5. One of only two or three originally built for Greg Edmondson of the Memphis-based band BREAKING POINT. This bass features an Amber tinted Spalted Maple top, Maple back, 24-fret Maple board, 7-piece neck (maple/wenge/maple/purpleheart/maple/wenge/maple) with abalone blocks, and a truly unique body shape reminiscent of a mix of both a Carl Thompson and the Benavente "SCA" body shape. Weighs about 10 pounds Black Hipshot "A" bridge and keys with inset Dunlop straplocks.

Electronics were completely redone with all new "stuff" by Mike Lull. Pickups are custom Aeros wired SERIES ONLY at Mike's recommendation. Preamp is Bartolini NTMB; controls are the standard Vol/Bal/B/M/T and 3-way freq selector. Bass is in Very Good condition, with only a few nicks and dings, including a couple that were repaired by Mike. Normal swirls on the back as you'd expect from a gigging bass, but nothing major.

This bass is no longer produced by Benavente. Per Brian Barrett at the Low End, retail of a new piece like it by Chris Benavente would hit somewhere in the $5k range, as built by Divinity Guitar Works.

The bass is very clean with only evidence of some superficial scratches on the back that could be easily buffed out if you're feeling saucy. It's a great bass but the neck profile isn't for me, it's quite flat from front to back and I prefer a baseball bat in my hands . It is a very fast neck, just not for me.

Will sell for $2450 or Trade for 34" scale 5 string basses. I'm interested in Sadowsky, Spector, Zon and LowEnd basses. I'd love to get my hands on a Sadowsky Modern 24, Zon Sonus Special or LowEnd Jazz or Thunderbird styled basses. I'm leaning more toward nice Jazz style basses right now as I don't really have one. This is the price with the brand new Audere 18V preamp and Aero pickups.

Upgrade!

I just ordered an Audere 3 band 18V preamp for the Benavente with passive tone and Z-mode switch ( which I love). Once that's in I'll jack up the price a bit to compensate for the cost. If you want the original Bart system I'll trow that in too. There is also a possibility that I may keep it after the gut swap.

That sucker sounded great before, I'd love to here that new pre. I'm pretty sure that Benny has the fastest neck I've ever played.

Benavente

It's a beautiful bass, for sure and it sounds really good, it's just not for me. The build quality of this and the Lowend basses I've played is impeccable. The body is, indeed maple with spalted maple top. I'm really after a chunkier neck and more "in your face" tone. This bass is really full and fat sounding, very reminiscent of the pillow put down by my Nordy ( ex-Nordy ).
The string spacing is 19mm to the best of my knowledge, sure feels like it. Thanks for the positive comments.

Toying with the idea of throwing a set of Nordstrand dual coils ( wired in parallel) in this bass as I believe they will fit under the pickup covers. Hell.... this may turn in to a keeper if it doesn't go. Would love to get my hands on an MTD and will throw down some extra cash... considering I don't spend it on parts first.

Update:

Bass gutted

Audere will be here Monday, Nordstrand Dual coils will be here on Wedsnesday. Wondering if I should drill holes for Series/Single/Parallel switches. The Audere is Vol/Tone stacked-Balance-Bass-Mid-Treble and Z mode switch.

Today I cleaned and sanded the fretboard, polished the fretboard and finished it with a scotchbrite pad. The fretboard was notable lighter colored after the process.... then I oiled it sumthin' fierce. You can't imagine the amount of gunk that came up! Jamerson would be ashamed.

This thing is still up for sale, it'll be next friday or so before it's back together and tested. For now I'm not drilling for switches until I evaluate the new guts.

The cavities are also well done and shielded BTW. Everything is beautifully done. Aero Pickups will be up for sale. After evaluation they can easily be rewired for parallel operation. I went with the Nordstrand DCs as they were designed from the ground up for Parallel operation.

Update

Should have this back together by tomorrow evening. Will post updated pics once completed. Thinking I'm going to install 1 series/single parallel switch that controls both pickups...We'll see.

All back together! Kept the Aero pickups as the Nordstrands didn't fit, the Audere is in place with one hole drilled for the active passive switch. New Knobs and a new set of strings in place. Works Great! Pics up tomorry.

Need to get $2300 out of it... Make me an offa!
