Botique Fretless - Charles Orr (Prince's Luthier)

Charles ORR Fretless Custom Shop Bass
$1775 + Shipping Continental USA

About This Bass
This bass is not for everyone. Chances are that if you have never lusted after a Lull, early Alebic or other Custom Shop Bass, you would not appreciate this bass.

Charles ORR was a micro botque builder in the 70s and 80s. He built unique freeform styling before it was imitated by later luthiers.

It is estimated that he only made 6 basses during his career - this may be his only fretless.

You can order a documentry on Orr at the following Link

I want you to be happy with your new gear. If it helps you, we can talk on the phone for a few minutes.

================================================== ==========================

General Information
I am the not the original owner of this bass. The bass appears to have very limited playing. The original tuners have been replaced with enclosed tuners. The ORR created bridge is original.

If you have considered owning a 5 String but did not like the cookie cutter botique design everyone has - this may be your option.

This is a very unique looking bass.

Model Custom Fretless
Country USA
Color Transparent
Hardware Gold Plated
Neck Neck Through
Electronics Active High A
Case Leather Gig Bag
Modifications Enclosed Tuners
Inlay Oval Pearl

Neck, Action and Intonation
ORRs were known to have a unique squarish neck. At first it's a different feel, after becoming aclimated - it's easy to play.

This is a very sleek and unique neck.

This stays in tune and is very balanced up the neck. This has moderate action ideal for heavier strings.

Before shipping, the bridge will be strobe tuned with new strings installed.

If I were keeping this bass, I'd consider moving it to an anvil case.

Finish Notes
Being an antique collector, I avoid any synthetic polishes. I do not play hard or with a pick. To avoid "buckle rash" I do not wear a belt.

This has a natural Laquer finish with apprriate crazing.

The bass is wiped down with a microfiber cloth after use. Periodically Lemon oil is applied to the fretboards.

The body and headstock have vintage patina.

Sound and Tone
The nearest tone that can be attributed to the Active High A circuitry is an early active Alembic.

Electronics
This has a vintage active circuitry. Before shipping, the pots will be cleaned.

Condition
This guitar is a vintage botique and has remained in a climate controlled environment. This guitar is used and is years old.

The hardware and body both have vintage patina.

Please expect it to not be factory perfect. The hardware is shiny from 5 feet and has slight visible wear.

I do not use stands and for the best of my knowledge has not been dropped.

Overall is a great playng and sounding bass.

I've played a friend's Orr Bass many times and they play and sound incredible! The neck profile is very unique, but very playable and comfortable.

I let him talk me into putting one of his bridges on a bass years ago...... no real noticable improvement in my estimation. Did play one of his fretless basses at his shop, pretty nice stuff for the day.

Bridges.. I could go on rants and rants about this topic - sorry you had the same experience I had putting a Baddass on my Foundation - it's still there.. doing nothing.

I've had better luck putting Cirrus Type bridges.. basically because we can control all the string placement.

I,m remembering the neck on the one I played was like a 2x4 with the edges rounded over, he claimed it made you position your hand correctly, which may be true because thats the only way you could play it, maybe the guy was some sorta mad genius or something, I heard he passed away several years ago.

The neck is a unique radius... like all basses it takes a few minutes to get the hang of it... This is not your bass if you have poor posture and hang your thumb over the top.
