Brubaker Brute JJx-5 w/bart 59J1's

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, for sale is my Brubaker Brute JJX-5. Black on Black, maple board. Pickups have been upgraded to Bartolini 59 J1's, also includes original pickups which are decent, but the Bartolini's really pulled this bass together, added clarity but retained the snarl, and balanced out the low B, which is great, especially for a 34" scale. Original preamp, which sounds good to me. Knobs were replaced with smaller plastic knobs with white line position markers, pretty sure I have the originals too but i'll have to check. I'll pick up the bass from my practice space tonight and post pictures very soon, but I can't think of any cosmetic issues. This bass plays really well, and has the most comfortable neck for a 5 of any I've had. Shipped in a pretty beat up gig bag, and will come packed very well.

$525 shipped to Lower 48, and Paypal only. No trades, thanks.

I don't own a scale, but very average and comfortable, especially for a 5. And it's less than my 96 Sterling and early 80's MIJ Precision. 9lbs maybe? It balances really well too.

bump

I bought one of these and the necks on them are great. My only beef with it is the PU's. I bet this one sounds great. How is the slap tone with the Barts? How does it sound with the original preamp?

I agree Richst, this bass is really great, and thanks. I'm not much of a slapper, but there are some great demos on youtube of this bass by Steve Jenkins and Kevin Walker, who certainly can slap mightily. Those are done with the stock pickups, which I agree were just ok (at best), and the bart upgrade really opened up the sound and added definition and warmth, and evened things out, so I bet it's real cool. The original preamp seems to suit the pu's just fine, the bass knob's EQ point is in a very musical spot to my ears, not boomy, and not wimpy.

I should note there's some criticism of these on TB about some of them having pickup blend knobs that don't work too well, but this one works great.

Free bump for the best 5 string you can get for under $1000. Probably in the top 5 best you can get for under $1500, especially after a pickup upgrade. The necks on these are phenomenal.

The blend knob 'issue' is not an issue with this model, it's only with the Brutes with the MM pickups...not the JJ pickups.

Agreed mmbongo, and thanks for the clarification. Had stated in this post I was going to put this on hold, but have now edited it as something has popped up I'm very interested in, so bass is still very much available....
