That is how Brubaker does it. It is called a bolt-thru neck. I will let Malcolm explain

I guess it is actually called "deep set neck" as Kevin Brubaker called so.
Whatever it is, Brubaker bass are awesome!

It's called a "bolt-thru" neck. A combination of bolt-on and neck thru.

While it is a 34 5/8" scale most people are surprised by how comfortable the scale length is. Kevin keeps things shifted towards the right so the reach to the left isn't as noticeable as some instruments with bridges more towards the center of the body.

I stopped by a GC today and there was a young kid, maybe 12 or so, and he was playing Spain, Stanley Clarke and a bunch of other great "bass music" so I asked him if he wanted to check out my older Brubaker Xtreme 5. It's 34 5/8" scale and he had no problem playing it.

Thanks again Brad. I appreciate the input. I have several friends that have played this bass and never even noticed that it is 34 5/8" scale. Its a non issue for most people.

If anyone is interested in hearing a recording of the bass, go to www.tomvella.com.

I think I used it on all of the tracks. Track 8 is probably the best shot at hearing it used the way a fretless should be used.

I was wondering if Brad would chime in, as he has always been a big fan of Kevin's work, very knowledgeable, and quite helpful.

Man, I want this bass badly. The Willis tone comparison has me drooling, but the combo of the scale length and narrower than 19mm bridge spacing is giving me a great deal of pause. Brad is very convincing though regarding the Bru magic.

Anyway, I'll listen to the clips tonight. Who knows... maybe this will end up coming to TN.

I can give a little bit of history on this bass...

It was designed and built in consultation with Gary Willis about a year before Ibanez released the GWB. All of the measurements, spacings, and wood combinations are in the same ballpark as Gary's basses except that the pickup isn't radiused. It, however, has the Lane Poor soapbar, which does just as good, if not better, job than the radiused Barts.

The tuxedo cerruse finish is one-of-a-kind, to my knowledge. I think only F-Bass has done cerreuse work with swamp-ash. The fretboard was originally an ebony slab, but in 2000, Kevin Brubaker put on the stainless steel fretlines (mandolin fretwire, actually) and epoxied the board.

The bass sings!

How far down can you adjust the spacing on the bridge?

Can it go down to 16.5 mm?

I'm honestly not sure. It's at 18mm and can go tighter, but I don't know if it can go down to 16.5mm. I don't really want to mess up the whole setup to find out. If your seriously interested I can figure it out for you. It's just hard to get those hip shot bridges set perfect once you start messing with spacing.

Spacing adjustment?

http://store.hipshotproducts.com/car...t_detail&p=121

Maybe Hipshot could tell you the adjustment range on a specific bridge? Nominal spacing for the 5 string, A style bridges listed on the above page goes from .669" to .787" (17 mm to 20 mm). Note, that's for different bridges -- doesn't say anything about the adjustment range of one bridge. I'm pretty sure the 17mm could go down to 16.5 mm easily. Doubt the 20mm could. The 18mm bridge (assuming that's the bridge on this bass)? Don't know.

I have a 19 mm A-style Hipshot bridge on a bass I bought not too long ago and have been thinking of messing with the spacing -- haven't tried it yet, so don't know how easy or messy it will be. Good luck!

EDIT: http://www.lmii.com/carttwo/thirdpro...E+Bass+Bridges
This page gives some info on the overall adjustment range (low to high strings) of the 19mm models. Doesn't directly apply here, but might give you an idea.
