RARE: Burns Barracuda: Bass VI/Baritone GREAT CONDITION!

2 Attachment(s)
The Barracuda can be played either as a short scale bass (like a Fender Bass VI,) an effective drop-tuned, dark-sounding, lead and rhythm guitar or as a standard or baritone guitar. Perfect for everything from Jet Harris and spaghetti-western music to the great Bass VI sounds of The Cure. Tuning is the same as standard 6 string guitar but can also be set one octave below. It can also be set-up as a baritone by using thinner strings. Perfect working condition! Was just professionally set-up and currently has a fresh set of Fender Bass VI Strings installed (.095>.025.) Korean made, 30" scale MOP bound neck, 1.75" at the nut. It's currently set-up as a Bass VI tuned E>e one octave lower than a guitar. The three classic Burns Tri-Sonic single coil pickups are really amazing and offer a great deal of tone flexibility. 5 position pick up switch. The tone knob nearest the jack also pulls out giving you another five pup combinations. It's a very versatile and great sounding instrument. Has one very small paint chip on lower horn. No other cracks or scratches. 2003 model. It's in 9.5/10 condition. No case. Will be packed expertly so don't worry.

Price: $500 shipped to CONUS. Pay-Pal Only !!NO TRADES!!

Wow, I'm really tempted to return the used Hellcat VI I just bought at GC and buy this... I know you are a big fan of the 2012 Hellcat, but (and I know you're maybe a little biased) would you say this is a better VI than the older Hellcat?

IMHO, yes it is. The pups on the older HCVI truly suck IMO. Sound is quite dark and ill-defined. I think cheaper mini-hums were an ill advised choice that totally marred an otherwise great effort. Apparently Schecter agreed. BTW, that's why I sold my original HCVI and upgraded. But, YMMV......

Your other alternative is to replace the pups on the HCVI with some single coils that might be more appropriate like the Duncan SJAG-1 they use on the newer HCVIs or some others. The Tri-Sonics on the Burns IMO totally blow away the original HCVI mini-hums. But, noodle around on the Net and see what others say......

Do you have any sound clips? I can't seem to find any on the internet, and I've never seen one of these "in person." This is about the only thing that's preventing me from buying this Barracuda outright.

Sorry, I don't. But, check out some of these YouTubes. There are also SO many variables such as tuning, string choice/gauge, amp choice/settings, which pups are on, on-board tone and volume settings, effects, set-up, etc. Personally, I NEVER know how anything sounds until I play it with my fingers through my rig.

Can you get a decent traditional bass sound out of it?

Yes, using .095>.025 or even thicker strings and a bass amp. Another string option is: The standard Fender set is 25-35-45-55-75-95. instead go for 30-40-50-65-85-105, so purchase a set of Sadowsky “Blue Label” stainless steel rounds, which are 45 65 85 and 105, and use the heavier three to replace the 55, 75, and 95 (they are long scale but not *too* long, I had to wind the thick part around the tuning posts just a little bit. I also had to remove the silk wrap in order to get them to fit through the string-through ferrules on the back of the bass). For the lighter three strings, get three single D’Addario Pro Steel bass strings (regular long-scale) from juststrings.com, a 30, a 40 and a 50. They are long-scale, but winding them around the tuning post is not an issue with them--regular guitar strings fall within those gauges and guitarists wind the thick part of the strings around their tuning posts all the time. Anyway, the instrument plays and sounds better now, and I am very happy (the Sadowsky strings are wonderful sounding. OR you can use LaBella Flats for Bass VI.

How come you`re selling this? Did something better come along?

kenstee 01-27-2013 09:25 AM

It has a larger profile than some other VIs. I have some shoulder issues which makes playing it - for some reason - more difficult for me now. No one else seems to have this issue. So, its all about me and this medical condition. Very bummed as I really love it. Fantastic sound and look!
